AN HOUR WITH SEYMOUR CHWAST (3)

Nishio Now I would like to ask you about the time when you were making Push Pin Almanack, which became the foundation for opening Push Pin Studio. Have you been working for the Almanac since you were a student or after graduation from school?

Chwast After graduation from school,Milton Glaser, Edward Sorel, Reynold Ruffins and I had a studio where we did freelance work. Milton went to Italy on a Fulbright scholarship and Reynold, Ed and myself started the Push Pin AJmanack while we held full lime jobs. When Milton came back from Europe, he bacame involved in the Almanack and after about a year we decided that we were ready to quit our jobs and form a full time professional studio.

Nishio Why did you name your studio Push Pin?

Chwast It was named after the Push Pin Almanack. "Push pins" are used by designers and the quaintness of the word was sort of consistent with the contents of the Almanac itself.

span style="font-weight:bold;">Nishio How many issues did you print?

Chwast We did 15 issues of the Push Pin Almanac over a period three years.

Nishio What kind of a publication is an Almanac?

Chwast An Almanac was originally an annual handbook for farmers and it had a calendar and told farmers when to plant crops.
It also gave home remedies for sicknesses and forecast good weather and bad.

Nishio Where did you send them to?

Chwast We sent them to art directors for the purpose of getting assignments.

Nishio How did you raise money for publishing the Almanac?

Chwast We got a printer and typographer interested in it and printed it for nothing because these same art directors we sent the Almanack to also bought printing and type so there was very little expense in publishing it. We had to pay for postage and paper and we developed a mailing list of art directors. We sent out about 2,000 Almanacs each issue.

Nishio I heard that Push Pin Studio was set up in 1954 ...

Chwast Yes.

Nishio How many people were there at the time?

Chwast We started with three, Milton, Ed, and myself. And then we slowly grew. We added a secretary and a representative and an assistant. Ed left after about a year and Milton and I remained as partners.

Nishio I heard that you and Milton Glaser are the directors of Push Pin Studio but does it mean that both of you are the presidents of the studio?

Chwast We are the partners and we equally own the studio. Milton is the president and I am the vice-president of the corporation but we share the responsibilities and the rewards of the studio.

Nishio Do you have any knack to maintain this partnership for
18 years?

Chwast I don't know. But son sufficiently satisfied all these years. There has been mutual joy as well as respect working with Milton and the other designers and illustrators at Push Pin. As a studio it is possible for us to do things that we couldn't do as independent freelance artists. We can take assignments that are ambitious and we can do things such as publishing the Push Pin Almanak and its replacement the Push Pin Graphic. We are interested in packaging, films, illustrations and magazine design. A studio such as ours can afford us the resources we need to get into many areas.

Nishio During the past 18 years, didn't you have any dangerous
time between the two not because of the friendly relationship but because of the business?

Chwast Well, fortunately in graphic design there is little capital needed, unlike filmmaking or photography. We started in the studio with no money. We had a 10ft just as a place to work and had some art supplies and a telephone that were all necessary to go into business. The problem through the years has been to keep the studio small enough, so that we don't become victimized by growth. Neither Milton nor myself never wanted to become managers where we had to spend all our time looking at other people's work and signing papers.
We wanted to be artists so that we had to balance our interest in developing the studio "and developing ourselves as artists.
