AN HOUR WITH SEYMOUR CHWAST (2)

Nishio Why did you choose Cooper Union? Was it because the
school was free?

Chwast Mostly. I could not have afforded to go to art school if it wasn't free.

Nishio Did you get acquainted with Milton Glaser at Cooper Union?

Chwast Yes. We went to school together.

Nishio Do you remember the time when you first talked with
Milton? He explained about himself that he was a conscientious student. What type of student were you?

Chwast I remember he was very good and he was one of the best students in the school, and I was very impressed because he could draw as well as design.

Nishio And you?

Chwast I entered Cooper Union with a foundation in design along with my childhood interest in cartoons. I started making woodcuts in Will Barnett's printmaking class and I was fascinated by the medium.

Nishio So when did you decide to become an illustrator?

Chwast In school I became interested in typography as well as drawing and the ambition that developed was the ability to use my talents in design, typography, drawing and anything else rather than one particular area.

Nishio Among the teachers in Cooper Union, y whom were you
inhluenced most strongly? Would you please explain about shout explain about the teacher?

Chwast The teacher who was most important in my life was Leon Friend, my teacher in, high school I mentioned before. His background was Europe between the wars. It was a flourishing period for design and illustration. Mr. Friend introduced his students to GEBRAUCHSGRAFIK which was perhaps the first international design magazine. It opened up a whole new world to us. He instilled a spirit of competition by showing us the works of his former students who had become
successful and by having us enter any design contest that came along.
