ジョン･アルコーンとの一時間
(ニューヨーク州オシニングの氏のアトリエで。インタビューの２ヶ月後､一家はイタリーのフロレンスに移転.
数年後、ニューヨークへ復帰した模様。)

右のカバー・デザインは、アルコーン氏がこの作品集のために寄せてくれたオリジナル。

フローレンスへの移住の要因の一つは、子どもたちの一人の交通事故死によるものと聞かされた。

家庭および幼少年時代

chuukyuu　　あなたは、1935年にニューヨーク･シティーでお生まれ
になったのですね？

アルコーン　　　はい、ニューヨークです。２月１０日生まれです。

chuukyuu　　ニューヨークのどの辺ですか？

アルコーン　　コローナというところです。

chuukyuu　　そこはマンハッタン地区ですか？

アルコーン　　いえ、イーストリバーの向う側のクイーンズ地区です。
当時そこに住んでいたのはほとんどがイタリア系の人たちで、２軒が一つ
屋根の下で住めるようになっている木造の家が並び、道路の縁には街路樹
が植えられていました。

chuukyuu　　いつまでそこに住んでいらっしゃったのですか?

アルコーン　　　６歳までそこにいて、その後私の家族はロングアラ
ンドのグレート・ネックに引っ越しました。
いまは大きい近郊住宅地になっていますが、私が子供の頃は静かな農村
地帯で、草原では牛や馬が草を食み、私の家の道の一本向うには果樹園
が広がっていました。

chuukyuu　　ご両親の職業は?

アルコーン　　　父は保険会社の仕事をする統計学者でした。
父は、自分の生活環境を独得なものにするほどの豊かな才能に恵まれてお
り、また、とても優秀なアーチストでもありました。
いつも私を励ましては絵をかくように勧めてくれたり、新聞や本や色々な
美しい所に行った時の話などを通して、芸術に関心を持つよう心を配って
くれました。

chuukyuu　　厳格な人でしたか？

アルコーン　　その反対でした。
やさくて、穏やかで、話のよくわかる父親でした。
それはいまも同じです。
決して厳しい父ではありませんでした。

chuukyuu　　ご兄弟は？

アルコーン　　弟が２人います。
上のリチャードはルック誌のカメラマンで、下のロバートはカレッジを卒業したばかりで、この弟は教師になるつもりでいます。

chuukyuu　　ここであなたの少年時代のことをお聞きしたいのですが……。
どんなタイプの少年でしたか?

アルコーン　　子供の頃はとても活発だったのですよ。
とにかく馬が好きで、なにを措いても騎手になりたいと思っていました。
ロング・アイランドの東部に別荘があったのですが、そこで過した夏の
日々のことが私の一番楽しい思い出になっています。
舗装されていない道、新鮮な井戸水、馬車を駆って氷を買いに行った時
のこと、魚釣り･･･こんなことを思い出すと、大きな喜びと郷愁をおぼ
えずにはいられません。
夜明けとともに海岸に行き、父と一緒に作った小舟に一人で乗って遊ぶ
のが大好きでした。

chuukyuu　　少年時代のことでほかに忘れられないというような出来事がな
にかありますか？

アルコーン　　特にこれというようなものはありません。
きっとそれは、私が育った家庭に十分な愛と信頼があったからなのでしょ
う。
といっても、家庭そのものは、私がまだ小さな子供だった頃、母が病魔に
とりつかれてしまったので、普通ではありませんでした。
母は、２５年以上も多発性脳脊髄硬化症に苦しめられているのです。
ですから、私たちとともに暮した祖母や父がいなかったなら、私たち兄弟
が分かちあった幸せをかみしめることはなかったでしょう。

chuukyuu　　子供の頃のあなたはいつも絵をかいていらっしゃったの
ではないか、と考えるのですが……

アルコーン　　子供なりに、いつもなにか描いていました。
画用紙や絵の具や鉛筆などを欠かさないようにしてくれたのが父だった
のです。
また、私が絵をかいている時、なにを描いたらいいか、どういう風に描
いたらいいかなどと横からロを挿むような人はだれもいませんでした。
彼らが心掛けてくれたのは、必要な道具を揃えておくことと、私を勇気づ
けることだけでした。

Mr. Alcorn's atelier in Ossining, New York
A months after the interview, he and his family moved to Firenze in Italy

A boyhood

Nishio 　　You were born in New York City in 1935?
Alcorn　　Yes. New York. February 10th.
Nishio 　　What part ofthe city?
Alcorn　　 A place called Corona.
Nishio Is it a section of Manhattan?
Alcorn　　 No, it's across the East river in the borough of Queens.
It was mostly an Italian neighborhood at the time, of two family' frame houses and tree lined streets.
Nishio 　　You lived there until. ..
Alcorn　　 ... until I was six years old. Then my family moved to Great Neck, Long Island.
Now it's a large suburb, but whenI was a child it was quite rural.
Horses and cows grazed in the fields and orchards across the road from our house.
Nishio 　　What was the occupation, at the time, of your parents?
Alcorn　　 My father was a statistician for an insurance company. He is a very talented man, who, had the circumstances of his life been different, would have been a very fine artist.
He always encouraged me to draw, and, through prints and books and trips to museums exposed me to art.
Nishio 　　Was your f~ther very severe towards you?
Alcorn　　 Oh, not at all.
He was, and still is a very kind and gentle and understanding man.
He was never severe.
Nishio 　　Do you have brothers or sisters?
Alcorn　　 I have two younger brothers.
Richard is a photographer for Look Magazine.
My younger brother Robert has just finished college. He is going to teach.
Nishio Now I'd like to ask you about your childhood.
What kind of boy were you then?
Alcorn　　 It was a very happy and active childhood.
I had a passion for horses, and wanted more than anything to be a jockey.
My family had a cottage on eastern Long Island, and my happiest memories are of the summers we spent there.
I remember with great fondness and nostalgia the unpaved roads, the fresh pump water, going with my wagon to buy blocks of ice, and the fishing.
I would love to go down to the shore at daybreak, alone, and go out in my little dinghy, which my father and 1 had built.
Nishio 　　Did you have any unforgettable incidents or happenings
when you were little?
Alcorn　　 No, not really.
Probably because there was so much love and security at home.
Which in itself is unusual, for my mother became an invalid when I was still very young.
She has had Multiple Sclerosis for more than twenty-five years now.
The happiness my brothers and I enjoyed would not have been possible had it not been for my grandmother, who lived with us, and my father.
Nishio 　　I believe you were drawing most of the time when you were little.
Alcorn　　 I always drew as a child, and my father kept me supplied with paper and paints and pencils.
No one ever told me what to draw, or how, they just gave me materials and encouragement.
