January 25,1966

Dear Americans:
About 50,000 of us crashed to death on the roads last year.
We want to do something about it.
We don't know how much we can help, but we know we have to try.
We plan to use our advertising dollars to talk about safe driving.
To give solid hints about surviving.
To drum it in.
To tell you some obvious and some not-so-obvious things we can all do to stay in one piece.
We want to be professional nuisances.
We will nag you and plead with you to treat your car as if it were loaded.
If only one person is helped, that's good enough for us.
We feel that there is a moral responsibility that goes along with selling gasoline and oil, and we mean to live up to it.
We want you to live.

A Not-so-subtle remeinder for driving safty on the Memorial Day weekend from the Mobil Oil Corporation.

Mobil We want you to live

キャンペーンの解説;

The Mobil Oil Corporation began its driver-safety "we want you to live" campaign in 1966. During the first five-year period, through January 1971, it ran some SO different public-relations ads in newspapers and magazines and four television commercials, at a combined cost of about 58.5 million. These dramatic advertisements featured a large photo which took up two-thirds of the space; the copy, or text, occupied the balance.
Some of these advertisements were scheduled to run just before long holiday weekeneds. One that appeared before Labor Day showed a line of cars driving up a hill on a curve. The second car was about to pass. The headline asked "How is the driver of the first car going to kill the driver of the second car?' The answer that began the body copy was, "By driving too slowly."
Perhaps the most dramatic of the series showed a tombstone in a cemetery for a man "who didn't want to spoil his mother's Thanksgiving dinner by beinglate." The stone bore the date, November 26, 1970 Thanksgiving Day.
Socony, Mobil's predCl;essor company, ran a similar safe-driving campaign from 1923 to 1927, in the days when automobiles were just beginning to multiply.

Mobil

This is a trick picture.
Nobody is crazy enough to drive off a 10-story building.
Or are they?
The fact is, if you hit something when your car is doing 60 miles an hour, it's exactly the same as driving off a 10-story building, And it will get you to exactly the same place: the morgue.
We at Mobil don't expect you to drive atl0.or 15.miles an hour all the time.
The sad truth is, it wouldn't help if you did. Bad driving makes bad accidents. Period.
So if you remember anything, remember this: "you don't use your head at any speed, you're liable to lose it at any speed.
We have a vested interest in telling you this: Our business is selling gasoline and oil. We think we make the best products in the world, and we want to do everything we can to make sure that you'll be around to enjoy them.

Mobil We want you to live.

"When I'm all tensed up, driving relaxes me."

Nobody knows how many drivers are kille every day by tension is usually diagnosed by checking blood pressure. And dead drivers, naturally, don't have any.
Nor can tension ever be detected on a dead driver's breath.
So car crashes caused bJl tension have to be buried under the heading of "Improper Driving"---which every hour kills and maims more drivers than any other cause. (And not oniy drivers.
ln 1965, automobile accidents killed over 5,000 children.)
And the saddest part about it all is that using your car as a 2-ton tranquilizer doesn't even work very well.It actually prolongs your suffrings. Physical exercise works faster than driving. And lasts longer.Take a long walk. Fix the kids bike. Clean up the basement. Wash the car. Mow the lawn. Make up with your wife.
All of these and a million other exercises work belter and faster than driving. Some are even more fun. All of them are safer.
Of course, if you stay away from driving when you're keyed up, we at Mobil many sell a little less gasoline and oil today. But then, for both of us, there would always be tomorrow. And tomorrow. And tomorrow.

Mobil We want you to live.

You drive like the man you really are.

Drive behind a man for ten minutes and you can probably decided whether to hire him, fire him, marry him, divorce him or have him put away.
And it follows that he who follows you can make the same decisions.
Driving seems to bring out the worst in us more often than best.
We reveal secrets to strangers that we wouldn't tell to our best friends. Or even admit to ourselves.
So that's the first step, isn't it?
Before we fum the key, we ought to take a good , deep look into ourselves and admit that we could be better.
Not only as drivers. As people.
We are not talking about screwballs or maniacs. We are talking about everyday people doing everyday driving.
So, it's important for you to know that the great majority of accidents happen to our experienced drivers, travelling at moderate speeds, who never had an accident before.
Indeed, more than three-quarters of car fatalities occur on nice, dry roads within 25 miles of home.
Three-quarters of car fatalities last year added up to more than 37,000 dead people.
How many of the 37,000-plus deaths were caused by the piggish drivers? The rude ones? The ones who push and shove in elevators and supermarkets? The ones who are either slamming doors or blowing cigar smoke in your face?
We'll neither know. Autopsies don't tell us anything bout common courtesy.
We do know that driving is a chance for the good guys of the world to win for a change. Simply by setting a decent example.
The man who says " After you" is more likely to get where he's going than one who says " Nuts to you." "Nice guys may finish last. But they finish."
We at Mobil are not amateur psychiatrists or amateur preachers.
We are professional sellers of gasoline and oil. We see all kinds of people in our business and we want to keep seeing them.
Respectfully, we urge every driver on the road to take that good. deep look inside himself before the coroner dose it for him.

Highway
Hypnosis
and how to snap out of it.

One of the worst things that happens on the highway is that nothing happens.
You just drive and drive and drive and drive and drive yourself into a trance.
You become less alert because there seems to be less to be alert about.
And just then-when nothing is happening-anything can happen.
Unfortunately, it's very hard to get unstupefied. The trick is not to get stupefied in the first place.
Here are 17 simple ways to do it.
1 Keep a window open. Let the the fresh air hit your face, it will do you good.
2 Pull into s rest area and stop at least every two hours. Don't cheat. Get out (even if it's raining)and walk around the car, a few times.
3 PLay music you don't like on your radio. If you're an opera fan, play rock'n'roll. And vice versa. And a little too loud.
4 Worry about something. An ulcer is better than an accidet.
5 Take a thermos of coffee in case you can't get some when you stop.
6. Figure out what you'd do with a million dollars.
7. Change the position of your seat every now and then. Up and down, back and forth.
8. Buy some noisy food like potato chips or pretzels. Munch.
9 Take a side road instead of a superhighway for an hour or so. There's a lot of beautiful country out there. And with any luck, you may beat a toll.
10. Try to add up all the money they take in at one little toll booth. Get angry.
11. See how much of the Declaration of independence you can recite out loud.
12. If it's raining, change the speed of your windshield wipers every time you hear a commercial on the radio. Too often? O.K. Every other time.
13. Imagine what you would do if the car in front of you stopped short or had a blowout. Or if you had a blowout. It's good practice.
14. Pull into a service station and ask the attendant to talk you. Tell him you want to wake up.
15. eat a chocolate bar for the quick energy. If you're not worried about your waistline, have two.
16. Blow your horn at something, real or imagined. Noise helps.
17. Dream up 17 more ways to stay alert and use them on yourself. Or send to at Mobil. 150 East 42nd Street. New York .N.Y.l0017. and we'll make up another ad on the subject.

We at Mobil are running these advertisements for several reasons:
One is that we hope you'll llal we hope you'. stop in for gasoline and oil at any of the 27.000 Mobil stations across the country. We think that you'll be pleased with our products and with the people who sell them.
But above all, we want to be helpful, whether or not you stop in for gasoline or this time.
We want to do all we can to make sure you'll be around to try us next time.

American Roulette.

What sucks you into the game of American Roulette is that it seems so penny-ante,
Until you look at the odds:
If you're 40 years old, you have a life expectancy of 31 years to go, There are 16 million minutes in 31 years. So when you gamble with your life to gain a minute, you're actually giving odds of 16 million to 1.
Would you do that with money?
Of course, there are other prizes to be won, besides a minute here and a minute there, when you play American Roulette, We've listed afew of them below, Measure the possible gain against the possible loss and you'll see what a sucker's game it really is,

GAMBLE POSSIBLE
GAIN
POSSIBLE
LOSS
Necking and driving Added kicks Your life
A drink or two for the road A relexed feeling Your life
Refusing pull over when you are sleepy Proof of menhood Your life
First out of the parking lot Victory Your life
Bulling the slowpokes out of your lane King of the road Your life
Riding another month on bald tires Nothing Your life

Is there any point in continuing? This is a game where you can't even put away your winnings, You just have to lose once to be knocked out of the game for keeps.
Your gambling habits would normally be none of our business, But we at Mobil sell gasoline and oil for a living, and it's hard to just stand around losing customers to a shady operation like American Roulette. Without at least trying to break up the game.

8 cheap ways to shut the kids up when you're driving.

orse than that, it can drive you into a ditch or a tree or head-on into another car.
The trick is to do something about it before you leave. Later may be too late.
Here are 8 possibitities:

1. Before you start out on a trip, go to the dime store and buy some soft toys, coloring books, magic slates, games or puzzles. Wrap them individuaIJy and give them out along the way.

2. Make the oldest kid the Navigator. Go over the map with him, mark the route, and let him watch for road signs, towns, rivers and places' of interest. (This is an especially good idea if you're not too good at it yourself.)

3. Have the kids keep a Scrap Book of the trip. When you stop, let them collect postcards, match covers, menus and other souvenirs. When they get back in the car, they can paste them in the Scrap Book.

4.Play a game called Count Bumps. The kids cover their eyes and count the bumps the car goes over. (Make a rule that they nave to count to themselves, not out loud.)

5. When they get tired of counting bumps, get them to count something else. Anything else. Red cars. Blue cars. Police cars. Stars. Women drivers. Anything. Anything.

6. Take along a Junk: Box. It can be a shoe box full of spools, string, a magnifying glass, pipe cleaners, any old things. The kids will make up their own games to play with the junk.

7. Make a bed in the back for naps. You can do this easily by putting suitcases on the floor to level with the seat. (Whatever you do, don't forget favorite blankets and pillows.)

8. Suggest a game of Keep Quiet. Whoever keeps quiet longest wins.

If you have some pet ways of your own (leaving the kids at home doesn't count), let us in on them. Send them to Mobil, 150 East 42nd Street, New York, N. Y. 10017 and maybe we'll pass them along in another ad.

How to skid and love to tell the tale.

Oh boy. Are you in trouble!
You're driving the car in this picture and you're up against it. This is what to do,
1. Take your foot off the brake.
2. Take your foot off the gas. Slowly.
3. Now this is touchy . Torn your wheels a little to the right, in other words, steer the back to the way you were going.
No, No, No. That's too much. Just touch. That's it. Now you're straightening out.
But now the car's going the other way, O.k. Easy does it. Turn in the direction you want the car to go.
It's the logical thing to do.
As long as you keep skidding, keep pointing the car where you want it to be. But do it gently. Anything sudden makes everything worse.
We wish we could say, that this method does works every time you get into trouble.
Unfortunately, it doesn't; no method does.
But it can get you out of a tough spot. And it can keep a skid from going out of control alltogether.
So let's try it again. Act it out. Right now, wherever you are. Never mind how silly you look.
1. Take your foot off the brake.
2. Take your foot off the gas.
3, Steerthe car back where you want it to go. Easy.
Easy. Get the feel of it. If the front of the car is going to the left, nudge it over to the right. And vice versa, until you straighten out.
We at Mobil hope that you'll drive csarefully enough in bad weather to keep from skidding in thre first place.
But skidding does happen.
And we want you to know how to handle a skid because you'll nrver find out how good our products are if you aren't here to try them,

Legally Insane

It's sleeting and raining and fogging. And you can feel the ice under your tires.
Your wife is terrified.
"Slow down, you maniac."
"What do you mean, slow down. The sign said 60. I'm only doing 50."
Your wife is right, you maniac. Slow down.
Every single year, for over 30 years, driving too fast for conditions has been the leading cause of all fatal accidents.
Last year, driving too fast for conditions accounted for over one third of all fatal accidents.
Driving too fast for conditions is also the leading cause of all accidents, resulting in everything from a smashed-up car to a broken spine.
Maybe you didn't know all this before but now you know.
Now you know that driving legally and driving safely have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Driving too fast for conditions can get you killed easier than it can get you arrested.
We at Mobil have been in the oil business for over 100 years, and by now we're kind of used to crazy streaks of lightning passing our stations in all kinds of weather. But the frightening thunder that sometimes follows these crazy streaks of lightning-we never get used to that.

"As soon as I got behind the wheel, I sober up."

ln a Survey of fatal accidents in Calfornia, 65% of the drivers who were killed had been drnking.
In another survey of fatal accidents in Chicago, 76% of those responsible hadbeen drinking.
And in still another survey (they're endless) in New York, 33% of the drivers who were killed had been drinking.
Not necessanly drunk, mind you. But not sober, either.
You don't have to feel drunk to be too drunk to drive. Some people can't take even a single drink without it dimming their vision, slowing their reflexes and warping their judgement. But since this alcoholic under mining doesn't announce itself with drums and bugles it's usually not noticed. And that's what kills.
A litt!e more than a single, 2-ounce shot of whiskey in your blood can make you twice as liable to cause an accident than if you hadn't touched a drop.
Two such shots of whiskey in your veins can make you 6 times more liable to cause an accident. (Mind you, at this level you are not considered drunk in most states.)
And three shots can make you 25 times more liable to cause an accident than if you were cold sober. (Now, you're finally considered drunk Iin most states.)
Contrary to popular belief. God doesn't necessarily protect fools and drunkards. And you're a fool if you think you sober up when you get behind the wheel of your car. You may sweeten your breath to fool your wife and the state troopers. And you may sit up straight behind the wheel to fool yourself. But the coroner will know you've been drinklng anyway.
We at Mobil are in the gasoline and oil business and we welcome all the business we can get. Except the business of drivers who have no business on the road in the first place.
They're bad business for everybody.

The pedestrian always has the right of way?

That's what everybody seems to think.
But it isn't true. There is no such law.
And law or no law, almost 9.000 pedestrians were killed by cars last year.
But there is something that can stop it.
And that something is you. You as the driver and you as a pedestrian. Of all the gruesome accident problems we have, this one is the easiest to solve.
It's not a matter of signing petitions.
It doesn't need an Act of Congress.
And it won't cost a dime.
All it needs is a good, strong dose of consclence and maybe an overdose of common sense.
If your windshield is so dirty you can't see through it, you could ecasily kill somobody.
If your wipers make things worse instead of better, you could easily kill somebody.
If your horn doesn't work or if your brakes yank your car over to ono side, you could easily kill somebody.
If you don't look carefully before you back up or pull out or come around a corner, you could easily kill somebody.
If you drink or speed(or bOth), you could easily kIll somebody.
And then, no matter what the law says, you're the one who will have to live with yourself afterwards.
But what if the podestrian is wrong? Totally and completely wrong? UnfortUnately, there is no law against stupidity.
About 30% of the pedestrians who get killed have been drinking.
There is always somebody who goes strolling at night in a black raincoat with his back to traffic.
There is always a nice lady who croosses the street without peeking out from her umbrella bocause she doesn't want to get her hat wet.
There is always a kid who'd rather get himself to home plate than get himself home. Or who won't put a light on his bike.
As driver, it is our clear responsibilty to protect the people against themselves. And as pedestrians, it is our clear responsibillty not to make the same mistakes ourselves.
We at Mobil are in the gasolin and oil business. We sell our products to you when you are a driver. And we urge you to remember that drivers are brutally strong and that podeatTiant are pitifully woak.
he only thing we'd rather have you use in your car than our good products your good sense.

Fresh-killed chickin.

Bravo.
Let's hear itfor the winner.
That's him lying there-the dead one.
Or is he the loser?
You can't tell. Not that it matters very much. Because in the idiot game oi "chicken."winners and losers both die.
In the idiot game of "chicken." two cars speed straight for each other. Head on.
With luck. one car steers clear in the nick of time.
Without luck. neither car steers clear. And the winner and the loser are equally dead.
Some "game."
It took God Almighty to stop Abraham from making a blood sacrifice of his son.
What do you Suppose it will take to make us stop sacrificing our children?
We who bear them in sterilized hospitals, stuff them with Vitamins, educate them expensively. and then hand over the keys to the car and wait with our hearts in our mouths.
Too bad we educate them only to make a living and not to stay alive.
Because right now-this year-car accidents kill more young people than anything else. Including war. Including cancer. Including anything.
Yet we allow it.
Incredibly enough, fewer, than half the young people who get drivers' licenses every year have passed adriver training course.
Which leaves well over 2 million (!) youngsters who get licenses every year without passing such a course.
And this is the price we pay: 13,200 young people between 15 and 24 died in automobile accidents in 1965. (The exact number for 1966 isn't in yet; it will probably be higher.)
It's a gruesome answer to the population explosion.
And if we all sit still about it, we ourselves are quilty of "chickening out."
Yet we mustn't frighten our youngsters; they're frightened enough.
We must teach them.
Does your school system have a driver training course?
Are there books in your school library or public library on driving? (Did you know such books exist?
Do they know?)
Are the requirements for getting a driver's license in you in state tough enough?
Are your radio and TV stations paying any attention to the problem? Your newspapers?
Does anyone in your community give awalds for good driving? The PTA? Or the Boy Scouts? The Chamber of Commerce? The churches or sinagogues?
What kind of driver are you yourself? Do you set a good example or a poor one?
Would your company insist on a driver training course before they'd hire someone?
Would your schools insist on a training before they'd tum ayoungster loose?
Would it help?
Yes, it would. Education works. Drivers in large truck fleets are trained to drive safely. And some of them have dropped accident rates to only about half that of the general public,
It would cost little or nothing to get these things going. And we haven't a minute to spare. It's blood that 'We have on our hands, not time.
we at Mobil sell gasoline and oil for our living to the living. Naturally, we'd like young people to grow up into custmers. But for now we'd be hlppy, If they'd simply grow up.

Till death us do part.

It may be beautiful to die for love in a poem.
But it's ugly and stupid to die for love in a car.
Yet how many times have you seen (or been) a couple more interested in passion than in passing ? Too involved with living to worry about dying?
As a nation, we are allowing our young to be buried in tons of steel. And not only the reckless lovers---the just plain nice kids as well.
Everyone is alarmed about it. No one really knows what to do. And automobile accidents, believe it or not, continue to be the leadling cause of death among young people between 15 and 24 years of age.
Parents are alarmed and hand over the keys to the car anyway.
Insurance companies are alarmed and charge enormous rates which deter no one.
Even statisticians (who don't alarm easiIy) are alarmed enough to tell us that by 1970, 14,450 young adults will die in cars each year.
(Just to put those 14,450 young lives in perspective, that is far more than the number of young lives we have lost so far in Viet Nam.)
Is it for this that we spent our dimes and dollars to all but wipe out polio? Is it for this that medical science conquered diphtheria and smallpox?
What kind of society is it that keeps its youngsters alive only long enough to sacrifice them on the highway? .
Yet that is exactly what's happening. And it's incredible.
Young people should be the best drivers, not the worst.
They have the sharper eyes, the steadier nerves, the quicker reflexes. They probably even have the better understanding of how a car works;
So why?
Are they too dense to learn ? Too smart to obey the obvious rules? Too sure of themselves? Too un-sure? Or simply too young and immature?
How can we get them to be old enough to be wise enough before it's too late?
One way is by insisting on better driver training programs in school. Or after school. Or after work. Or during summers. By having stricter licensing requirements. By rewarding the good drivers instead of merely punishing the bad ones. By having uniform national driving laws (which don't exist today). By having radio and TV and the press deal more with the problem. By getting you to be less complacent.
Above all, by setting a decent example ourselves.
Nobody can stop young people from driving. And nobody should. Quite the contrary. The more exposed they become to sound driving techniques, the better they're going to be. (Doctors and lawyers "practice;" why not drivers?)
We at Mobil are not preachers or teachers. We sell gasoline and oil for a living and we want everyone to be a potential customer.
If not today, tomorrow. And we want everyone, young and old, to have his fair share of tomorrows.
