bring them with you to Jamaica.


Wouldn't it be nice to bring the children along to Jamaica, to show them what a varied and lovely world we live in?
And wouldn't it be nice to get them out of your hair once you're here?
We understand, because we like parents. Not as much as we like children, of course. But enough. Enough to have miraculously preserved The Great Nanny Tradition, complete in its old-time mixture of love and firmness.
Now, don't think that Nannies must be old fuddy-duddies. They're not like that at all. Look at the picture above. Jamaican Nannies tend to be young and pretty ladies, and although many of them carry such practical titles as Practical Nurse, they are no less magical than fairy godmothers used to be.
Part of the magic is their wages. For a mere $3.50 a day, your hotel or travel agent can make a Nanny appear.
She'll take the kids to play. Show them bright crayon-colored birds and shells and flowers and fruit . And teach them Jamaican folk songs and tales that they'll keep to tell their children .
By the week, you pay even less: as little as $12 with board . This is an especially suitable arrangement if you've rented a cottage and want a live-in Nanny.
Check out this cottage idea, by the way, if you' re planning to come with the family; it's one of the easiest ways to enjoy a vacation here.
There are cottages to be had for well under $200 a week, complete with private beach, swimming pool and boat. And aside from the Nanny, servants are included in the price.

光のスペクトルは、
赤、オレンジ、黄、緑、青、
藍、紫と習っていたら、
ジャマイカでは通用しませんよ。


ジャマイカのジャングルには色が溢れています。ドロシー･マクナブができたての染物を川で洗ってでもいるのでしょうか。このような狡猾な染屋でさえも、この島の色すべてを把握しきれていないのです。
たとえば、テングニシ（ほら貝の一種）の内側はどんな色か分かりますか？真珠のようなピンクに、桃のような緑をしているのです。ライラックより濃い色だけれど、色の名前が出てこない。
あんまり深く考えないでください。
この島には真つぶ貝、ほら貝、玉貝など何百種類もの貝がありますから、名前のない色なんてざらにあります。
試しにここへ来てしばらく貝探しをしてみてください。収集家たちが驚くほどの金額を払ってくれますよ。これで旅費を浮かしましょう。
これまでは色について話しながら浜を歩き、貝に触れてきました。アーモンドの木や穏やかな波の音を聴き、何マイルも先から吹いてくる愛おしく柔らかな風に包まれていると体中の力が抜けてきます……
おっと、思わずうとうとしてしまいました。色の話に戻りましょう。
ジャマイカの人々は、色の濃淡に敏感です。ジャマイカに行くと、アフリカ系、アイルランド系、中国系、インド系など様々な美女に出逢うことでしょう。それは決して珍しいことではありませんよ。ジャマイカでは当たり前のことなのです。笑顔でないとコミュニケーションも儘なりません。
会話は国際スポーツといってもいいでしょう。時たま、我々の会話はちょっとした歌のようになることもあります。もちろん、歌を歌うことだってたくさんあります。不思議なことではありますが、我々の歌はちょっとした会話のようになるのです。カリプソはご存じですか？
色についてのことではありませんよ？
ジャマイカでの生活において、魅かれるもの全てに手を出していたら、ジャマイカの全てを到底知ることはできません。
結局何が言いたいかというと、ブルー･マウンテン、バフ･ベイ、ゴールデン･スプリング、グリーン･グロッド、マローン･カントリー、レッド･ヒルズ、ローズ･ホール、ホワイト･リバーにイエロー･サンダース･ツリーズなど、様々な土地へ行っていただきたいのです。休暇の過ごし方も色とりどりなわけですから。

If you were taught that
the colors of the spectrum are red,
orange, yellow, green, blue,
indigo and violet, you weren't
brought up in Jamaica.


The most colorful sight in the Jamaican jungle may well be Dorothy McNab washing out her fabulous fabrics after printing them. But even this most artful dyer can't capture some of the colors we see every day on our island.
For instance, what color is the inside of a fighting conch shell? Pearly-pink-peachy-green, we'd say, with lilac overtones and another shade we can't find a name for.
That was easy.
But what about a left-handed whelk shell? Or a tulip band shell? Or a moon shell? And there are hundreds more, all touched with nameless hues.
You might try looking for some while you're here. Collectors pay walloping prices for them , and a lucky find could cover the cost of your trip.
But we were speaking of colors before we wandered down the beach after shells --- a temptation we often succumb to. It's hard to resist, when you're surrounded by miles of lovely soft sand dotted with almond trees and lapped by cool waves and...
But back to the spectrum.
Jamaican people, for example, come in every shade. You might meet a beautiful girl of mixed African, Irish, Chinese and Indian blood . If you do, it won't be unusual, because meeting people is simple in Jamaica. No smile goes unreturned, and most lead to conversation.
Talking, in fact, is said to be our national sport. Though in some ways our talk is a little like singing. We also sing a lot. Oddly enough, our singing is a little like talking.
You know about Calypso?
But this was about color, wasn't it?
It's hard to keep to the subject when the subject touches everything in Jamaican life. This is, after all, the land of the Blue Mountains, Buff Bay, Colden Spring, Green Grotto, the Maroon Country, Red Hills, Rose Hall, the White River and Yellow Sanders Trees.
Have a colorful vacation.
People who can stick to the subject are to be found at your travel agent and at Jamaica Tourist Board in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago and San Francisco.

白い魔女を見つけにローズ・ホールへ行くのです。
だどり着いたらお化け綿の木の下に座り、
オービア魔法の物語を聞きましょう。
幽霊など信じていない方でも、
物語の世界に引き込まれてしまうことでしょう。


18世紀にジャマイカにおける暴動の数は、フォート・ロイヤルの野蛮な海賊たちよりも、ローズ・ホールの白い魔女、アーニー・パーマーの愚行の方が多いのです。
海賊たちは言います、アーニーは３人の夫を殺害したと。
海賊たちは言います、アーニーは自分の奴隷たちを散々に苦しめ、ついには奴隷たちによって殺されたと。
海賊たちは言います、アーニーはオービア・ウーマン…所謂、魔女だと。幽霊の彼女は偉大なる家に現れるの
だと。このことについて大きな声では話しません。
海賊たちの話を信じるかどうかはあなた次第です。日が沈んだ直後にローズ・ホールに足を運ぶと、管理人はいつもいらいらしています。彼が帰宅する前に、アーニーが植えたという、血のように赤い花々を見せてくれます。荒れ果てた階段までその丈を伸ばした花々は、島中探しても類ありません。
独りでその場に立っていると、南国の空気に妙な寒気を感じます。虚しささえ覚える宵に耳を澄ませると、小鳥の囀りすら聞こえません。
管理人の後を追い、巨大な綿の木に住む幽霊について尋ねてみましょう。彼はきっと笑って言うでしょう。「ふふ、あなたほどその幽霊を気にかける人はいませんよ。」

ジャマイカでは、どのバーマンも主にレシピの素になった霊についての話をしてくれるでしょう。
ホワイト・ラム（無色）、ライト・ラム（軽い芳香）、ミディアム・ラム（すこし強めの芳香）、ダーク・ラム（濃い褐色）など、ラム酒の微妙な違いも発見できますよ。ラム・ブリュロにも挑戦してみましょう。カワラヒワを探すのもいいですね。
ホワイト・ラムというのはローズ・ホールの特質染み込んだ甘蔗から造られているのでしょうか？
いいえ、ご安心ください。ホワイト・ウィッチとは別のホワイトですから。

Go to Rose Hall to seek the
White Wicth; sit under
a Duppy's cotton tree; hear
stories of Obeah magic.
Even people who don't believe
in ghosts find Jamaica bewitching.


In Jamaica's riotous 18th Century, Annie Palmer, The White Witch of Rose Hall was more of a scandal than even Fort Royal's wild pirates.
They say she murdered three husbands.
They say that she tortured her slaves, and was finally killed by them.
They say that Annie was an Obeah Woman --- a witch. And they say her ghost haunts the Great House yet.
But they don't say it out loud.
Believe what you will. But go to Rose Hall. Go just after sunset, when the caretaker gets nervous. Before he leaves, have him show you the blood-red flowers that Annie planted. They grow at the foot of the ruined stairs. And nowhere else on the island.
Then stand alone. Feel the odd chill in the tropic air. Hear the sound of silence in a hollow of the evening where no birds sing.
When you catch up with the caretaker, ask him about the Duppies who live in the trunks of the giant cotton trees. He'll laugh. "Oh, mahn, no one 'fraid of Duppy no more."
All the same, nobody chops down a cotton tree to make a dugout canoe without first appeasing its Duppy with a rum party. It's our happiest superstition.
After twilight at Rose Hall, you may not yet believe in ghosts, but you'll surely believe in rum parties.
Every barman in Jamaica will tell you stories of spirits, usually in the form of recipes.
Discover the subtle differences in rums: white, light, medium, dark. Try them in a Rum Brulot. Or a Yellow Bird.
Is the white rum that's made of the sugar cane from Rose Hall embued with some special quality? Don't think of it. Relax. Have another White Witch.
Enchanting, isn't it?

朝餉は時間をかけてゆっくり派の方は、
チーチー鳥の群れを
ご覧になれるでしょう。
ほぼ確実に。


バルコニーで朝餉を摂りましょう（ジャマイカではほとんどの部屋がバルコニー付きです。）ゆっくり、のんびりとポーポーやライムを味わってください。アグリ・フルーツもあります。スライスされたパイナップルをちょびちょびと齧りながら、浜辺と暗礁の間に見える１６の青い影を数えます。のんびり数えていると、チーチー鳥がやってきます。この鳥はジャマイカの人々のように単に人懐っこい鳥だと思ったら間違いですよ。砂糖を盗んで行ってしまいますからね（とは言ってもやはりチーチー鳥は愛くるしいので、私どもは砂糖の生産量をトン単位に増やしました。）
朝餉で鳥たちに会えなくとも、まだ夕餉が残っています。モンテゴ・ベイから数マイル離れたアンチョビにあるリサ・サーモンさんの家では、毎日１５時半ちょうどから夕餉が始まります。そこに鳥たちが何百も集まってくるのです。もちろんあなたも歓迎されますよ。少し早めに来て鳥たちを待ち伏せしましょう。インコ、バーベナ、クイット、グラス・アイなど種類豊富です。サフラン・フィンチがやってくれば、青々としていた木がたちまち黄金色へと変わります。ハニー・ウォーターを飲んでいると、あなたの指にハチドリがやってくるでしょう。

If you like a really leisurely
breakfast, we can almost
guarantee you the company of
a chee-chee bird. Almost.


Take breakfast on your balcony (most rooms in Jamaica have balconies). And take your time.
Dawdle over your pawpaw and lime. Toy with your ugli fruit. Nibble a pineapple slice as you count the sixteen shades of blue between the beach and the reef.
Your patience will probably be rewarded by a visit from a chee-chee bird. Is he just friendly, like all Jamaicands? Not a bit of it. He's come to thieve your sugar.
(Let him. There's more where that came from. We grow it by the ton.)
If the birds don't come to you for breakfast, you can go to them for dinner. Their dinner. Every afternoon at 3:30 sharp, they flock in their hundreds to Miss Lisa Salmon's house in Anchovy, a few miles from Montego Bay.
You're welcome there, too.
Come a little early and watch the birds arrive. Parrotlets, vervains, quits and glasseyes. See a green tree turn suddenly yellow with saffron finches. Lure a humming-bird to your finger with a sucking-bottle of honey-water.
How many species of birds are there in Jamaica? James Bond only knows. (See "Bird of the West Indies." by James Bond. Honestly. Agent 007 was named after him.)
If you think finch-feeding is for the birds, and you prefer the better-known James Bond, we'll understand. And we'll help.
You can live a rich fantasy life, in surroundings secluded enough for the most selective spy, all over Ian Fleming's favorite island.
There are hidden bungalows in the hills. Beach houses ideally suited for secretive doings. Cliffside cottages over private coves. All for rent.

本日のお説教は、見出すことの喜び、五感すべてを感じえる。
我々すべてに与えられた、幸運なる御霊についてです。
ジャマイカではこう言います「汝、目を太らせよ」と。呪われた過去を持つ聖堂などよりも、驚きに満ちたことを見出すでしょう。
たとえば、「ドクターのほら穴」は、洞窟のことでしょうか？いいえ、それは白昼夢の中に創造されたような南海の孤島にあるビーチのこと。
「総督の客車」？それは、ぎらぎらした歴史の金で縁取られた遺物でしょうか？
いいえ、それはミュージシャン、チリンチリンなるバーと共に、滑らかに静寂な椰子の木陰にピクニック停車するモダンなジャングルツアー列車なのです。
ジャマイカでは味わうのも二度、なんです。
朝食のお皿にあるのはスクランブルエッグのようですが・・・。いえいえ、アキーなんです。
ほら、窓の外の高い木になっているクリンツォンの房なんですよ。
そしてよおく聞いてください。
聞こえてくる歌うような、揺れるような言葉は本物の英語なんです。
でも、少し違うのです。
「swipple」という言葉、「slippery（つるつるする）」という意味ですが聞き心地がいいですよね。（切りたての熟れたパウパウ＝マンゴーの説明に使います）
「jing-jang」これはうるさい人たち。（安売りをねらって市場にやってくるhappy jing-jangs。)
「crampiffy」なんて言葉もありますが忘れてください。「つっけんどんな人」そんな人いませんから。
視覚、味覚、聴覚、とくれば今度は臭覚ですね。
ここには、ジャスミン、ハニーサックル、ミモサ、オールスパイス、ハイビスカス、
アラマンダスそしてポインセチア。（ここではファンシーアナスというのですよ）
こんな感触もありますよ、ご機嫌で暖かな水は、ほかのどの海の水よりも
柔らかく、洗練されたビーチは、サラサラで細やかで・・・たまりません。
あなたの第六感、ジャマイカを呼んでいませんか？そうですよね。

If the wild, buccaneering sea captain
who once stood all this quarterdeck
knew what it was being used for now,
he'd turn over in his grave. Amen.


Our sermon today is The Joy of Discovery, given to those lucky souls among us who can use all their five sweet senses.
"Let your eyes grow fat," we say in Jamaica, and you'll find even more surprising things than an organ loft with a wicked past.
So look twice here, before you leap. And jump to no conclusions.
For instance, is Doctor's Cave a cave? No. A beach, of the kind designed in a daydream of tropic isles.
Is the Governor's Coach a gilded relic of our gaudy history? No. It's a modern train that glides you through a jungle tour, with traveling musicians, a tinkling bar and a restful palm-shaded picnic pause.
Taste twice in Jamaica, too.
Are those scrambled eggs on your breakfast plate? No. It's ackee. You see it growing in crintson clusters on tall trees outside your window.
And listen twice.
That singing, swinging language you hear is really English.
But not really.
It has words like "swipple," which means slippery but sounds nicer. (Use it to describe fresh-cut pawpaw, ripe mangoes.) Words like "jing-jang" for a noisy crowd. (Bargain-hunt on market day and join the happy jingjangs.) Words like "crampiffy" to mean unfriendly. But forget it. It's a word you won't use.
Look. Taste. Listen. Now smell.
We have jasmine and honeysuckle, mimosa and cassias, allspice, hibiscus, allamandas. And poincianas, too. (We call them Fancy Annas.)
For your sense of touch, cool warm water that somehow seems softer than other seas. Superfine, granulated, confectioners' beaches. Oh yes.
Does your sixth sense tell you to come to Jamaica? It makes sense.

ブルーマウンテンの
ニューキャッスル軍隊養成キャンプで
最高の一日をお過ごしください。

忘れられない地獄のひと時を堪能することでしょう。


ニューキャッスルは無断離隊問題とは関係のない、世界中で数少ない駐屯地の１つです。実際に行って見ると、ブルーマウンテン標高約1,170メートルの高さから見る眺めは壮観です。登山の途中ではそこらじゅうでハチドリの鳴く声を聴き、ブーケンビリアやスイカブラが生い茂った、英国風、植民地風、ビクトリア風の立派な建物も目に入ってきます。涼しくて気持ちの良い丘陵地帯では窓の下でふわふわの雲が泳ぎ、目の前には約７０キロメートルものキングストンの街並みと大海原が広がっています。深い峡谷に行けば鳥の歌声に包まれることでしょう……
そんな素敵なところですから、軍隊の方々は訓練の合間にやってきてはハメをはずして問題を起こしてしまうことがあります。我々庶民が訪れるときも注意しないといけませんね。
風光明媚なこの熱帯の地へ向かうことは一見華やかですが、駐屯地へ向かっているということを忘れないで下さい。そこの「マネジメント」では、親切に登山客の前で兵隊の行進をするよう配慮しています。（行進はどこでもできますからね。）行進を見たら、ちょっとした訓練のスタートです。ゆるやかな上り坂を２０分ほど歩きましょう。この訓練には「女性の行く道」と、聞く人を安心させるような名前がついています。ただ歩行中に風が吹けば、たちまち「キャサリンの『もう限界』旅行」と名前が変わってしまいます。（登りきるまでに、シロイワヤギだと25分、大人の男性で40分、女性で55分、老いた兵士や幼い子供だと1時間と5分かかります。）
膝栗毛がつらいと思ったら、いつでもロバを借りることができます。（ここで注意していただきたいのは、歩いて登るよりもロバに乗る方が時間がかかることです。）そのロバと飼い主は都心から離れた、メイビス・バンクという町で働いています。山の頂上までの登下山料は、1往復あたり8.4ドル（約3,000円：1ドル360円換算）です。（飼い主とロバへ払いましょう。）ウィットフィールド・ホールではお泊り旅行も可能です。旅行盛り時が近づくとホステルは混んできます。それもそうです、なんてったって1泊あたり1.4ドル（約500円）という破格のお値段ですもの。軍人の生活に比べたらぜいたくとは言えませんが、日常から離れてでも行ってみる価値があります。さらに詳しい休暇中の旅行や入隊についての情報をお求めの方は、旅行代理店かジャマイカ観光局までお越し下さい。

Spend a glorious day
at the Newcastle Army Training
Camp on Blue Mountain.
Don't laugh. You'll have one
hell of a good time.


Newcastle is one of the few army posts in the world with no AWOL problem. In fact, it's so ruddy beautiful up there, 3850 feet up Blue Mountain, with thc hummingbirds dipping all around, and the Bougainvillea and honeysuckle winding over the veddy British/Colonial/Victorian buildings, and the cool, ticlly hillcountry air, and the puffy clouds sailing by under the windows, and tht 40-mile view of Kingston and the sea, and the deep gorges filled with birdsong --- that the army sometimes has trouble getting the troops to Ieave when their training cycle's over.
We have the same problem with the civilians who visit here.
Just so you don't forget, amid all this tropical scenic splendor, that you're still on an Army post, the "management" has kindly laid out a series of mountain marches for you. (All voluntary, of course.)
Start your training easy --- with a short 20-minute hike up a gentle curving path --- called reassuringly, The Ladys' Mile. If you get your wind, you can build up to the almost vertical Catherine's Peak trip. ("Mountain goats, 25 min.; Gentlemen, 40 min.; Ladies, 55 min.; Old Soldiers and Young Children, 1 hr. 5 min.")
If Shank's Mare is not your speed, you can always rent a mule (although be forewarned: walking is faster). The mules and their masters work out of a town called Mavis Bank. To the top of the mountain and back, it's $8.40 for mon and beast. (The mon goes along to keep the beast honest.) Make an overnight trip out of it with a stay at Whitfield Hall, a rough-it hostel near the peak. $1.40 per night. It's not as pulsh as army life, But after all, one must make some sacrifices these days.

スや猫のキサンダーの物語で育ちました。
その話を聞かせてくれるよう頼んでごらんになるといい。


ジャマイカの人ならだれでもあなたにアナンシーの話をしてくれるでしょう。でも、
これらの古いアシャンティのおとぎばなしを純粋なかたちで聞きたいとお思いなら、
車と運転手を雇って、ジェット･コースターの軌道なみに急な赤い粘土の道を山村ま
ですっとばす必要があります(それは全く恐るべきドライブです。
これをやったあとでは、あなたもちょっとした話を二つ三つ作ることができます)。

名付けられたこの山国のかくれた村を訪ねてください。
そこでの夕陽が見られるように旅程を組んでください。これがお話の時間なのです。
広場に腰をおろしたお婆さんがいますか？　コーヒー色の顔に紫色のボンネットを
かぶってますか？　そう、その人こそあなたがはるばる聞きにきた語り部なのです。
童心に返ってください。そしてお婆さんの足元に座っている静かな子供たちの仲間
入りをしましょう。お婆さんは手を組んで話し始めます。「Nou a uol taim
Anansin stuori…」（逃げ出すことはありません、あなたの運転手が通訳をしてく
れます）翻訳「じゃ、昔むかしのアナンシーのお話を始めますよ」
語り終わっても、もっとアフリカ･ムードにひたっていたかったら山で夜をすごしなさ
い。マンデビル･ホテルは19世紀の植民地アフリカの小説に出てくるような、壮大な蔦
のからまった建物です（いったん19世紀的値段を聞いたら二度とこの丘から出たくなく
なるでしょう。３食つきで１日11ドル。これって決しておとぎ話じゃないんです）。

Instead of Donald Duck and
Mickey Mouse, they grow up on the
West African tales of Anancy
the Spiderman, Moos-Moos the mouse
and Kisander the cat. Ask them
to tell you the stories some time.


Anybody in Jamaica could tell you the Anancy stories. But if you'd like to hear these old Ashanti fairy tales preserved in their purest form, you have to hire a car and driver, and head up the roller-coaster red clay roads into the mountain villages. (It's a hairy, scary drive. After you've made it, you'll have a few stories of your own to tell.)
Drive to the village of Quick Step, or Me No Sen' You No Come, or Content, or Poor Man's Corner, or Nonsuch, or Wait-aBit, or Stretch and Set, or Rest, or Retreat, or Retirement. Or any of the other whimsically, humorously, sadly, mischievousIy, or ironically named villages hidden in the hill country.
Time your trip so that you arrive at sunset. That's the story-telling hour. See that old, old, old woman sitting by the side of the village square? The one with the purple bonnet over her coffee-bean face? Well, she's the one you've come this far to hear.
Make yourself as young as possible, and join the quiet children at her feet. The old woman folds her hands and begins: "Nou a uol taim Anansi-in stuori, we gwain at nou." (Don't panic. Your driver will translate the incomprehensible curves of her mountain dialect for you --- as skillfully as he negotiated the curves of the mountain roads.) English translation: "Now a old-time Anancying story we going at now."
After the story ends, if you'd like to stay in the African mood a little while longer, spend the night in the mountains --- at the Mandeville Hotel, a great, rambling structure that looks like something out of a novel about 19th century colonial Africa. (Once you hear the 19th-century prices, you may never come out of the hills: $11 a day --- including three meals. And that's no fairy tale.)
