白い魔女を見つけにローズ・ホールへ行くのです。
だどり着いたらお化け綿の木の下に座り、
オービア魔法の物語を聞きましょう。
幽霊など信じていない方でも、
物語の世界に引き込まれてしまうことでしょう。
18世紀にジャマイカにおける暴動の数は、フォート・ロイヤルの野蛮な海賊たちよりも、ローズ・ホールの白い魔女、アーニー・パーマーの愚行の方が多いのです。
海賊たちは言います、アーニーは３人の夫を殺害したと。
海賊たちは言います、アーニーは自分の奴隷たちを散々に苦しめ、ついには奴隷たちによって殺されたと。
海賊たちは言います、アーニーはオービア・ウーマン…所謂、魔女だと。幽霊の彼女は偉大なる家に現れるの
だと。このことについて大きな声では話しません。
海賊たちの話を信じるかどうかはあなた次第です。日が沈んだ直後にローズ・ホールに足を運ぶと、管理人はいつもいらいらしています。彼が帰宅する前に、アーニーが植えたという、血のように赤い花々を見せてくれます。荒れ果てた階段までその丈を伸ばした花々は、島中探しても類ありません。
独りでその場に立っていると、南国の空気に妙な寒気を感じます。虚しささえ覚える宵に耳を澄ませると、小鳥の囀りすら聞こえません。
管理人の後を追い、巨大な綿の木に住む幽霊について尋ねてみましょう。彼はきっと笑って言うでしょう。「ふふ、あなたほどその幽霊を気にかける人はいませんよ。」
ラム酒パーティーで初めてその幽霊が現れたからといって、誰も綿の木を切り倒して丸木舟を造ろうとはしません。パーティーに幽霊が現れたことはむしろ、最もおめでたいことなのです。
ローズ・ホールにて黄昏時が過ぎると、もう幽霊はいないのかもしれないとお思いになることでしょう。ならばラム酒パーティーに参加しましょう。
ジャマイカでは、どのバーマンも主にレシピの素になった霊についての話をしてくれるでしょう。
ホワイト・ラム（無色）、ライト・ラム（軽い芳香）、ミディアム・ラム（すこし強めの芳香）、ダーク・ラム（濃い褐色）など、ラム酒の微妙な違いも発見できますよ。ラム・ブリュロにも挑戦してみましょう。カワラヒワを探すのもいいですね。
ホワイト・ラムというのはローズ・ホールの特質染み込んだ甘蔗から造られているのでしょうか？
いいえ、ご安心ください。ホワイト・ウィッチとは別のホワイトですから。

Go to Rose Hall to seek the
White Wicth; sit under
a Duppy's cotton tree; hear
stories of Obeah magic.
Even people who don't believe
in ghosts find Jamaica bewitching.
In Jamaica's riotous 18th Century, Annie Palmer, The White Witch of Rose Hall was more of a scandal than even Fort Royal's wild pirates.
They say she murdered three husbands.
They say that she tortured her slaves, and was finally killed by them.
They say that Annie was an Obeah Woman --- a witch. And they say her ghost haunts the Great House yet.
But they don't say it out loud.
Believe what you will. But go to Rose Hall. Go just after sunset, when the caretaker gets nervous. Before he leaves, have him show you the blood-red flowers that Annie planted. They grow at the foot of the ruined stairs. And nowhere else on the island.
Then stand alone. Feel the odd chill in the tropic air. Hear the sound of silence in a hollow of the evening where no birds sing.
When you catch up with the caretaker, ask him about the Duppies who live in the trunks of the giant cotton trees. He'll laugh. "Oh, mahn, no one 'fraid of Duppy no more."
All the same, nobody chops down a cotton tree to make a dugout canoe without first appeasing its Duppy with a rum party. It's our happiest superstition.
After twilight at Rose Hall, you may not yet believe in ghosts, but you'll surely believe in rum parties.
