光のスペクトルは、
赤、オレンジ、黄、緑、青、
藍、紫と習っていたら、
ジャマイカでは通用しませんよ。
ジャマイカのジャングルには色が溢れています。ドロシー･マクナブができたての染物を川で洗ってでもいるのでしょうか。このような狡猾な染屋でさえも、この島の色すべてを把握しきれていないのです。
たとえば、テングニシ（ほら貝の一種）の内側はどんな色か分かりますか？真珠のようなピンクに、桃のような緑をしているのです。ライラックより濃い色だけれど、色の名前が出てこない。
あんまり深く考えないでください。
この島には真つぶ貝、ほら貝、玉貝など何百種類もの貝がありますから、名前のない色なんてざらにあります。
試しにここへ来てしばらく貝探しをしてみてください。収集家たちが驚くほどの金額を払ってくれますよ。これで旅費を浮かしましょう。
これまでは色について話しながら浜を歩き、貝に触れてきました。アーモンドの木や穏やかな波の音を聴き、何マイルも先から吹いてくる愛おしく柔らかな風に包まれていると体中の力が抜けてきます……
おっと、思わずうとうとしてしまいました。色の話に戻りましょう。
ジャマイカの人々は、色の濃淡に敏感です。ジャマイカに行くと、アフリカ系、アイルランド系、中国系、インド系など様々な美女に出逢うことでしょう。それは決して珍しいことではありませんよ。ジャマイカでは当たり前のことなのです。笑顔でないとコミュニケーションも儘なりません。
会話は国際スポーツといってもいいでしょう。時たま、我々の会話はちょっとした歌のようになることもあります。もちろん、歌を歌うことだってたくさんあります。不思議なことではありますが、我々の歌はちょっとした会話のようになるのです。カリプソはご存じですか？
色についてのことではありませんよ？
ジャマイカでの生活において、魅かれるもの全てに手を出していたら、ジャマイカの全てを到底知ることはできません。
結局何が言いたいかというと、ブルー･マウンテン、バフ･ベイ、ゴールデン･スプリング、グリーン･グロッド、マローン･カントリー、レッド･ヒルズ、ローズ･ホール、ホワイト･リバーにイエロー･サンダース･ツリーズなど、様々な土地へ行っていただきたいのです。休暇の過ごし方も色とりどりなわけですから。

If you were taught that
the colors of the spectrum are red,
orange, yellow, green, blue,
indigo and violet, you weren't
brought up in Jamaica.
The most colorful sight in the Jamaican jungle may well be Dorothy McNab washing out her fabulous fabrics after printing them. But even this most artful dyer can't capture some of the colors we see every day on our island.
For instance, what color is the inside of a fighting conch shell? Pearly-pink-peachy-green, we'd say, with lilac overtones and another shade we can't find a name for.
That was easy.
But what about a left-handed whelk shell? Or a tulip band shell? Or a moon shell? And there are hundreds more, all touched with nameless hues.
You might try looking for some while you're here. Collectors pay walloping prices for them , and a lucky find could cover the cost of your trip.
But we were speaking of colors before we wandered down the beach after shells --- a temptation we often succumb to. It's hard to resist, when you're surrounded by miles of lovely soft sand dotted with almond trees and lapped by cool waves and...
But back to the spectrum.
Jamaican people, for example, come in every shade. You might meet a beautiful girl of mixed African, Irish, Chinese and Indian blood . If you do, it won't be unusual, because meeting people is simple in Jamaica. No smile goes unreturned, and most lead to conversation.
Talking, in fact, is said to be our national sport. Though in some ways our talk is a little like singing. We also sing a lot. Oddly enough, our singing is a little like talking.

But this was about color, wasn't it?
It's hard to keep to the subject when the subject touches everything in Jamaican life. This is, after all, the land of the Blue Mountains, Buff Bay, Colden Spring, Green Grotto, the Maroon Country, Red Hills, Rose Hall, the White River and Yellow Sanders Trees.
Have a colorful vacation.
