ブルーマウンテンの
ニューキャッスル軍隊養成キャンプで
最高の一日をお過ごしください。
笑っていられるのは今のうちです。
忘れられない地獄のひと時を堪能することでしょう。
ニューキャッスルは無断離隊問題とは関係のない、世界中で数少ない駐屯地の１つです。実際に行って見ると、ブルーマウンテン標高約1,170メートルの高さから見る眺めは壮観です。登山の途中ではそこらじゅうでハチドリの鳴く声を聴き、ブーケンビリアやスイカブラが生い茂った、英国風、植民地風、ビクトリア風の立派な建物も目に入ってきます。涼しくて気持ちの良い丘陵地帯では窓の下でふわふわの雲が泳ぎ、目の前には約７０キロメートルものキングストンの街並みと大海原が広がっています。深い峡谷に行けば鳥の歌声に包まれることでしょう……
そんな素敵なところですから、軍隊の方々は訓練の合間にやってきてはハメをはずして問題を起こしてしまうことがあります。我々庶民が訪れるときも注意しないといけませんね。
風光明媚なこの熱帯の地へ向かうことは一見華やかですが、駐屯地へ向かっているということを忘れないで下さい。そこの「マネジメント」では、親切に登山客の前で兵隊の行進をするよう配慮しています。（行進はどこでもできますからね。）行進を見たら、ちょっとした訓練のスタートです。ゆるやかな上り坂を２０分ほど歩きましょう。この訓練には「女性の行く道」と、聞く人を安心させるような名前がついています。ただ歩行中に風が吹けば、たちまち「キャサリンの『もう限界』旅行」と名前が変わってしまいます。（登りきるまでに、シロイワヤギだと25分、大人の男性で40分、女性で55分、老いた兵士や幼い子供だと1時間と5分かかります。）
膝栗毛がつらいと思ったら、いつでもロバを借りることができます。（ここで注意していただきたいのは、歩いて登るよりもロバに乗る方が時間がかかることです。）そのロバと飼い主は都心から離れた、メイビス・バンクという町で働いています。山の頂上までの登下山料は、1往復あたり8.4ドル（約3,000円：1ドル360円換算）です。（飼い主とロバへ払いましょう。）ウィットフィールド・ホールではお泊り旅行も可能です。旅行盛り時が近づくとホステルは混んできます。それもそうです、なんてったって1泊あたり1.4ドル（約500円）という破格のお値段ですもの。軍人の生活に比べたらぜいたくとは言えませんが、日常から離れてでも行ってみる価値があります。さらに詳しい休暇中の旅行や入隊についての情報をお求めの方は、旅行代理店かジャマイカ観光局までお越し下さい。

at the Newcastle Army Training
Camp on Blue Mountain.
Don't laugh. You'll have one
hell of a good time.
Newcastle is one of the few army posts in the world with no AWOL problem. In fact, it's so ruddy beautiful up there, 3850 feet up Blue Mountain, with thc hummingbirds dipping all around, and the Bougainvillea and honeysuckle winding over the veddy British/Colonial/Victorian buildings, and the cool, ticlly hillcountry air, and the puffy clouds sailing by under the windows, and tht 40-mile view of Kingston and the sea, and the deep gorges filled with birdsong --- that the army sometimes has trouble getting the troops to Ieave when their training cycle's over.
We have the same problem with the civilians who visit here.
Just so you don't forget, amid all this tropical scenic splendor, that you're still on an Army post, the "management" has kindly laid out a series of mountain marches for you. (All voluntary, of course.)
Start your training easy --- with a short 20-minute hike up a gentle curving path --- called reassuringly, The Ladys' Mile. If you get your wind, you can build up to the almost vertical Catherine's Peak trip. ("Mountain goats, 25 min.; Gentlemen, 40 min.; Ladies, 55 min.; Old Soldiers and Young Children, 1 hr. 5 min.")
If Shank's Mare is not your speed, you can always rent a mule (although be forewarned: walking is faster). The mules and their masters work out of a town called Mavis Bank. To the top of the mountain and back, it's $8.40 for mon and beast. (The mon goes along to keep the beast honest.) Make an overnight trip out of it with a stay at Whitfield Hall, a rough-it hostel near the peak. $1.40 per night. It's not as pulsh as army life, But after all, one must make some sacrifices these days.
