仕事を通じて、自分の個性や技術を磨いていくことができる場所って、
さほど多くはありません。
いまでは、ほんとうに少なくなりました。
幸運なことに、私どもはそれらのうちの一つです。
それらがこんなに高かったとして以来、私どものもとで働くほとんどの
整備員は飛行機に夢中でした。彼らは幸福でなかったか、あるいは他の
種類の仕事をしてそれを満たしたでしょう。
「飛行機オタク」の若者のうちのある人たちは、アメリカン航空のメカ
ニカルとして働けるなら、私どもの人事部へ何度だって足を運ぶことを
いとわないでしょう。
このような整備員にとっては、お金が第一ではないのです。
この人たちには仕事にかけている強烈な誇りと責任感があります。
誰にであれ、仕事がどれくらい重要か、彼らに伝えなければなりません。
私どもが複葉飛行機で郵便物を空輸していた時期からこっち、ずっと私
どものこの仕事にたずさわっていた人の指導のもとで働きます。
民間航空の偉大なる先達。
この伝統は受け継がれています。
私どものほとんどの整備係は転職しません;転職したとしてもまた戻っ
てくる数は驚くほどの高率なのです。
そう、この仕事が好きなのですね。また、仕事を通してそのことを示
してもいます。

“Give me ａ man who loves his work.”
There aren't many places left where ａ man can get this personally
involved with his work.
We're lucky; ours is one of them.
Most of the mechanics who work for us have been crazy about air-
planes ever since they were this high; they wouldn't be happy or
satisfied doing any other kind of work.
Some of the youngsters who've got the "bug" will come back to our
employment office 10,15, even 20 times for a chance to be ａ mech-
anic at American Airlines.
Mechanics like this aren't in it just for the money. They have a
fierce pride in their work, and a sense of responsibility. Nobody
has to tell them how important the job is.
They work under men who've been with us since the days when we
were flying the mail in biplanes; the grand old men of civil avi-
ation.
And the spirit is contagious.
Few of our men ever leave; of those who do, a surprising number
come back.
They love their work. and their work shows it.
