生家のこと

chuuyuu　　生まれたのはオクラホマ･シチー
ですか、それともオクラホマ州のどこかですか?

デイビス　　セントラホマという町です。
人口が２００人ぐらいの小さなところです。

chuuyuu　　そこからオクラホマ･シチーまでは近いのですか?

デイビス　　特に近いとは言えませんね。
セントラホマと呼ばれるのは、ここがオクラホマ州の中央にあたるとこ
ろだからなのです。

chuuyuu　　ほう。
ところで、そこはどんなところですか?
たとえば平野であるとか、山の多いところであるとか……

　
デイビス　　　平野です。

chuuyuu　　１９３８年生まれと聞いていますが、誕生日は?

デイビス　　２月１０日です。

chuuyuu　　ご両親のことや、ご兄弟のこと
をお聞きしてもよろしいですか?

デイビス　　　　かまいませんとも。

chuuyuu　　ご兄弟は?

デイビス　　　　弟が1人と姉が1人います。

chuuyuu　　ご両親の職業は?

デイビス　　　　父は、メソジスト派の牧師です。
現在父は、オクラホマでメソジスト派の孤児院の院長をしています。

chuuyuu　　するとあなたは、厳格な家庭で育てられたというわけです
ね。
ところで父親としてはどんな人でしたか?

デイビス　　　　まず知っておいていただきたいのは、私の父はいわゆる
典型的な牧師ではなかったということです。
私は８つになるまで父の顔を知らずに育ちました。
第２次世界大戦で父も召集されたからです。
ですから父の味がわかるようになったのは大きくなってからです。
でもいい親父なんですよ、ちょっとカウボーイ的な一面をのぞかせる……
テキサスの牧場で育った父は、今でも趣味で家畜の世話をしているんです。

chuuyuu　　なん歳までオクラホマにいらっしゃいましたか?

デイビス　　戦時中は、アーカンサス、カンサス、モンタナ、テ
キサスなどで過ごしました。
戦後再びオクラホマに戻りました。
ここには17歳までいて、その後ニューヨークに出てきたのです。

故郷とその影響

chuuyuu　　生まれ故郷の風景とか人間関係とか習慣とかがあなたにどんな影響を与えているか話していただけますか?

デイビス　　　　あらゆる点で大きな影響を受けています。
最近はよく帰るんですよ、オクラホマに。
いままではこんなことなかったんですがね。
郷愁に駆られるってやつじゃないですか。
実は去年ホリデイ誌にオクラホマのことを書いてみたのですが、以前に
比べると近ごろは故郷でのあらゆることがいかに大きく私に反映してい
るかを強く感じている次第です。
オクラホマは少しばかり他の州と違っているんですよ。
というのは、ここは州に昇格するまで長い間インディアンの領地だった
ため、今でもここの人口の多くをインディアンが占めているのです。
ここが州として認められたのは１９０７年で、ごく最近のことですから、
いまでも開拓者魂を忘れてはいません。ここを切り開いたのは土地に飢
えた人々でした。
１８６９年にこの土地が政府の手から離れると、人々は馬や幌馬車を駆
ってスタートラインに集まりました。
そこに繰り広げられたのは号砲を合図とする土地の争奪戦だったのです。
もちろん、これはオクラホマが州になる以前の話なのですが。
ところで、｢真の勇気｣(True Grit)という映画があったのを覚えていら
っしゃいますか?
これは、州制がしかれる前のオクラホマの姿が的確に描かれている作品で、
当時の無法者がたくさん登場していました。
ジェシー･ジェイムスやボニーとクライドもいましたし、そのほかアメ
リカ
の有名な無法者がたくさんいました。
時が移ったとはいえ、いまでもオクラホマには当時の面影があちこちに残っ
ています。
とにかく、オクラホマっていうところには一種独特の味があるんですよ。

chuuyuu　　あなたは少年時代はどんな子供でしたか?

デイビス　　１０歳ぐらいのころはとても良い子供でしたし良い生徒
だったのですが、その後は手におえなかったようです。
小さいころの私はとてもおとなしくはずかしがりやで、よく本を読んで
いました。
特にマーク･トゥウェインの小説が大好きで、私の少年時代のすべてを
トム･ソーヤやハックルべリー･フィンの生き方に賭けようとしました。
ですから、いつも私は小さな小屋を作り、穴を掘ったり、宝捜しの真
似をしたりしていました。
私は、オクラホマこそ心のふるさとと思っています。
なぜなら１０歳から１２歳までの貴重な２年間をそこで過ごしたのですか
らです。
これこそ人生最高の歳と考えたのは１２の時でした。
これほど自分を満足させてくれる歳はほかにないのではないかと思ってい
ましたし、どうしてもこれ以上歳をとりたくないと思っていました。
ペットに飼っていた犬が友だちで、よく森へでかけて行っていかだを作って
は川に浮かべていましたっけ。
とにかく暇をみつけては野原や森の中で遊んでいました。
インディアンや無法者がいた時代を夢に描きながら、森のどこかに宝物をう
めて家へ帰り、なん日かたってから自分で作った地図をたよりに宝捜しをす
る、これも私の遊びの一つでした。
私は、私が過ごした少年時代は完璧だったと思っています。
こうした少年時代の喜びはだれもがもっているのではないでしょうか。
さて、父の仕事の関係で当時でも大きな町といわれていたツルサに移ってか
らの私にはそれまでの楽しみがなくなりました。
ツルサの高校に通うようになってからの私は、まったく手におえない生徒に
なっていました。

chuuyuu　　手におえないって、どんなふうに?

デイビス　　それまでの学校の成績はどれも申し分なかったのです
が、その後は辛うじて試験に及第するといった状態で･･･…恐らくこれは、それ
まで通っていた田舎の学校に比べて、ツルサの学校はあまりにも洗練されていた
し、教科の程度もかなり高かったからでしょう。
勉強の仕方はそれほど違っていなかったのですが、ただツルサの学校では頻繁に試
験がありました。
私は怠け者の生徒だったのです。
試験などもちろん大嫌いでしたし、宿題さえろくに手をつけませんでした。
そんな時でも絵だけは喜んで描いていました……美術の時間が待ち遠しくて、数学や
歴史の時間になるとうんざりしていました。
いまごろになって興味をおぼえるようになった科目も、あのころはとにかくいやでい
やでたまらなかったのです。

Nishio 　　Where is your birth place?　Is it Oklahoma City or some
other place in Oklahoma?
Davis　　lt's a town called Centrahoma, a very small town with 200 people.
Nishio 　　 ls it very closet Oklahoma City?
Davis　　lt's not especially close.
It's called Centrahoma because it's right in the center of the State.
Nishio　　I see.　Well, what kind of the place is it?
Is it plains or is it a mountainous area?
Davis　　 Plains.
Nishio　　I heard that you were born in 1938, but when is yout
birthday?
Davis　　February 10th.
Nishio 　　　May I ask you about your parents, brothers and sisters?
Davis　　 Sure.
Nishio Do you have brothers or sisters?
Davis　　Yes, I have　one younger brother and one older sister.
Nishio　　What was the occupation, at the time, of your parents?
Davis　My father is a Methodist minister. He is now director of a Methodist home for children in Oklahoma.
Nishio 　　Oh. Then you must have grown up　in quite a Severe home.
Nishio 　　How was your father toward you when you were little?
Davis　 Well, he is not a typical minister, first of al1.
When I was very young he was in the War, World WarII, until I was about eight years old.
So I didn't see him much when was very small.
When I was older we had to become acquainted again.
He's a good father and he's a sort of cowboy.
He was raised in Texas, on a ranch and he raise cattle now, also, as a hobby.
Nishio 　　How long were you in Oklahoma?
Davis　During the war we lived in Arkansas, Kansas, .Montana
and Texas.
After the war, we came back to Oklahoma.
I went to school there until I was 17 and then came to New York.

Influenced by native country

Nishio 　　In your native country, if there was any scenery or personal relationship or habit that influenced your personality or present job please let me know.
Davis　　Yes, to a great extent. I've been going back there more in
last few years that I ever did before.
It's simply because I have become more nostalgic about it, I suppose.
I did a story about Oklahoma for Holiday Magazine last year and I think I'm more aware now of the influence than I was.
Oklahoma is a very unusual state because before it was a state, it had been Indian Territory for a long time, and so there is a large Indian population in Oklahoma.
It became a state only in 1907, and that is very recent, so it still retains a lot of pioneer feelings. The people who settled it were mostly hungry for land.
It was opened up by the government in 1889 and everyone got on their horses and they had a big starting line and everyone stood there on the horses or covered wagons.
They fired a gun and everyone went and grabbed land.
That was before it became a state.
You know the movie titled "True Grit"?
It was very good as a tale of Oklahoma before it became a state.
It was full of outlaws.
Jesse James was there, and Bonnie and Clyde were there.
All of the famous American outlaws were there.
It retains a lot of this character even now, although years have passed.
It's a unique state.
What kind of boy you were then?
I was a very good student when I was 10 or ll, but later I was a bad student.
When I was very young I was quiet and shy and I read a lot of books.
In particular I read Mark Twain and I tried to live my whole boyhood as if I were Tom Sawyer or
Huckleberry Finn.
And I was always building little houses or digging caves or searching Davis
for treasures. Oklahoma is really the place I think of as my home because that was where I lived from 10 to 12 years old.
And I thought at 12 years old that there was no better age to be.
I thought it was perfect and I didn't want to be older.
I had dogs, and I used to go out to the woods and built rafts and floated them on the river.
I spent most of my free time in the countryside and in the woods.
I imagined it as if it had been still full of Indians and outlaws, though it was in games.
I would bury little treasures and go back and make maps, then go back and dig them up the next week.
I think my childhood was perfect.
I think many people had as much fun as I did.
When we moved to Tulsa, it was a big city and where I went to high school, I was obliged to stop having as much fun.
This was because my father was transferred to Tulsa and I became a terrible student.
Nishio 　　How terrible?
Davis　　Before, I had made all perfect grades, and after that I just
barely passed.
In part this was because the school was more sophisticated and demands were so much greater than I'd been used to in a little country school.
I think I learned just as much but I didn't have to write so many papers and I was a very lazy student.
I didn't like to write papers and didn't like to do my homework.
I drew all the time.
I was interested in art, but I didn't like mathematics and I didn't like history, subjects which are fascinating to
me now, but at the time I hated them.
