Interview with Mr. Jack Dillon (7)

chuukyuu When hiring a new copywriter, does the agency write some one to join the agency?
Dillon I remember somebody here showing me a sensational ad that happened to be for golf clubs. I didn't know who did it, but it didn't look as though it were for client with a big budget, and I thought we ought to get in touch with this guy and see if he wanted to work for us. Then we heard it had been written by Lew Redmond and that took care of that. He's one of the best in the business. To give you a direct answer, sure we would.
We've attracted people by the kind of work that we do and by the stories of DDB's creative freedom. When we need a writer or art director, we can run an ad and usually find the kind of talent we want. I got my job here through an ad. I was ready to leave Fuller, Smith and I saw this ad asking for two samples of my work. By the time I answered it, they'd already got 2,000 answers and had decided on the person they wanted. They decided to hire me anyway, after I had interviews with Mary Wells, David Reider, Phyllis Robinson and Bill Bernbach.
