<<An interview with Mrs. Carole Anne Fine(1)

chuukyuu What is your teaching method?
Mrs.Fine You mean if I have somebody in my group or teaching in a
·class? I taught last year at the school of Visual Arts, where I taught advertising with an art director and I'm going to teach again in February.
And it just as if they were here at the agency in my group, we give them an assignment and we explain the problem such as it's a thirty seconds commercial of all they have money for it and it's TWA, theywant to announce that they're now flying non stop;o Tokyo. So they do the commercial and then we put the comercial up on the board in school and we talk about it and students talk about it. And we try to point out to them why we think it is bad or why we think it is good or what they could do to make it better or why did they do this. I try to find out what their thinking is by finding what they are thinking.
So they begin to think more clearly and more carefully.
chuukyuu Are you adapting one to one relationship rather than one to many relationship?
Mrs.Fine What do you mean?
chuukyuu When you are a teacher, I just believe you talk to many stu·dents at the same time. But when it comes to make copy or advertisement, you have to talk to him personally rather than through so called discussion.
Mrs.Fine Oh, you mean in the class. Yes, I think there's no such thing I can really get up and get a lecture on advertising because that's not how anybody ever understand anything. It's so personal. It's not like when you're giving a course in Shakespeare. So I would take one student out of time once in a while and say or the art director that I teach with says something in general. One example is, in a commercial if your picture is saying another, it's very confusing. People can't relate.
So we happen to see a commercial like that which student does, I'll discuss the commercial with the student. And then I'll say it in the classusually and will say, "You can't go two directions, for people can't doboth things at one time". So that's how I do in the class. They argueand I like to argue with them.
