<<An interview with Mrs. Carole Anne Fine(1)

chuukyuu Do you think that a talented copywriter in an agency with an undesirable atmosphere would not be able to do a good job?

Mrs.Fine Keep been rejected, he will get out of that agency fast. I mean my point is that I think talented writers are always recognized and always get places where they can be free.

chuukyuu Today in America, which agencies do you think provide copywriters with a desirable atmosphere? Please name as many of them as possible.

Mrs.Fine DDB of course. This agency, Wells, Rich, Greene, Carl Ally, Smith Greenland and there are some boutiques as they've been calling them in the advertising column like Case Crown and Curt Canvenison Simon. Y & R, I think, has some bad things but many good things. Jack Tinker is of course before they had problems.
Louis Holland Callaway. That is many as occur to me right now. I'm sure there are lot more.

chuukyuu It's interesting to hear that you didn't include Thompson. InJapan, even a huge company like Dentsu is so bureaucratic that nobody really wishes to go there, unless he needs security. Security I mean for few years he is just a clear, then five years later he can be a chief executive and then after that he can be a copywriter and so on.

Mrs.Fine That is in Dentsu.

chuukyuu Yes, but I heard even in Thompson.

Mrs.Fine Yes.

chuukyuu It seems to me that those small agencies, tively small but as compared with Thompson, have writers, I guess.

Mrs.Fine Well, I don't know, I really don't know much about Thompson. When Ron Rosenfeld went to J.W.Thompson, whom you know I believe, everybody really creative cat... by the way there aren't just too many in New York but there are a number of them... got interested in 1. W. Thompson. And then, of course, Ron is leaving now but I don't think the creative atmosphere there, I mean as far as like climbing from his to this to this if you want to go to that but I don't think you can be creatively free there.

chuukyuu It's like sterile organization.

Mrs.Fine Yes, exactly.in J.W.Thompson. And then, of course, Ron is leaving now but I don't think the creative atmosphere there, I mean as far as like climbing fro his to this to this if you want to go to that but I don't think you can be creatively free there.

chuukyuu It's like sterile organization.

Mrs.Fine Yes, exactly.

chuukyuu Who are the copywriters you respect? Please name as many as you want to, active or retired.

Mrs.Fine I think my number one all time favorite copywriter is Gene Case. There are lot of them I respect and think great. I think Ron Rosenfeld is great, I think Jack Dillon is great in his own way, I think Dick Rich is great. Let's see who else... try think it Doyle Dane, there are so many.
Bob Levenson. Although he is great but probably he is not my favorite.
Phyllis Robinson, of course, who is great. I also like Al Hampel who is.in Y & R.
