Jamaican paintings are
wildly priced.
$6 up.
You can pick them up
in galleries.
Or off houses.

Alan Hutchinson shows his paintings at home. Hanging all over the outside of his home. And his primitive, childlike pictures charm people out of $6 to $15. (His real profession: bedspringmender.)
Parboosingh, on the other hand (see picture and paintings above), is an artist. Paris. New York. Jamaica. Where he now lives and works in a gloriously gaudy cottage (lavender walls, cerulean blue doors) so close to the sea that the spray rusts his penpoints.
Parboo's paintings hang mostly at Kingston's Hill Gallery.
Inside.
And his style of charm costs $100 to $200.
Much of our most enchanting art, though, is not for sale.
Signs on the walls of local bars, for instance. "Peace and Love Bar." "Cat and Fiddle Bar," "Mutt and Jeff Bar:' Illustrated with doves, hearts, cats, fiddles. Mutts, Jeff.
And look at our houses. But carefully. Where you think you see pretty curtained windows, you're often seeing paintings of pretty curtained windows.
And look at our country. At a green hill, perhaps, with a Jamaican lady walking down in a purple dress, carrying a basket of pink-magenta-mauve-crimson flowers, against a steel-blue sky, in orange sunlight.
Parboo: "lt's frustrating. The colors here. You can't get them. You have to leave out rather than put in."
For more about our frustrating colors, fine artists and Mutt and Jeff bars, see your travel agent or Jamaica Tourist Board in New York. Miami, San Francisco. Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto.
