キングストンでは、
ステージがすべて
芝生に覆われた劇場に
行くことができます。
ジャマイカでは、すべてが舞台装置なのです。
午後8時半。舞台照明に明りが灯る。
場面は庭園。樹々、あふれる花々。いまだ残る芳醇な香り。
かすかに聞こえる雄鶏の鳴き声。アマガエルも鳴いている。
ジュリエットはため息をつき、ロミオは語る。
ベローナで迷い、ホープ通りの向こうにある、古くて広い家のきれいに刈りこまれた芝生の上で、座り心地のよい椅子に座って聞いています。
たとえシェイクスピアがあなたのリズムでなくても、ジャマイカでは、『ローマで起こった奇妙な出来事』のような光景、コンサート、バレエ。そして、ルイーズ・ベネット（ジャマイカ民謡のアーティスト）を見ることができるでしょう。
90キロの美しいルイーズが歌い、タップダンスを踊り、「お金っておもしろいものよ」と歌を通して襲ってくるのを見るまでは、何も見たことにはなりません。
とにかく、あなたが見るものはすべて演劇なのです。
ビーチ･パーティーでは、派手なパフォーマンスが行われています。炎を口に放り込んだり、ヤシの木の一番上に登ってぶら下がったり、12枚のシャツを脱ぎながら自転車に乗ってバランスを取ったり。
ジャマイカの女性たちはショーを見ることをやめてしまうほど魅力的。赤、オレンジ、紫の演劇的な色のドレスをまとったとき、中国、アフリカ、イギリスの混血たちがとてもドラマチックに見えます。
クリスマスもまたメロドラマ的です。
甘く、愉快なサンタの話を加えましょう。ジョン･カヌーというグロテスクなマスクをしたキャラクターが通りをクレイジーなアクションで踊りながら、両手を振って、子どもたちを追い払います。
子供たちはクリスマスのプレゼントをもらうだけではなく、恐怖までもプレゼントされるということですね。

In Kingston,
you can go to a theater
where all the lawn's a stage.
And Jamaica
is all the scenery.
8:30 P.M. The stage lights come up. The scene is a garden. Trees, lush flowers. Sweet-smelling, still. Distantly, a rooster crows. Tree toads whistle.
Juliet sighs. Romeo speaks.
You listen, sitting in a comfortable chair on the clipped lawn of a rambling house off Hope Road, lost in Verona.
In Jamaica.
If Shakespeare's not your meter, however, we also have spectacles like "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." And concerts. Ballets.
And Louise Bennett.
You haven't seen anything until you've seen 200 pounds of beautiful Louise singing, soft-shoeing, and mugging through "Money is a Funny Ting."
Anyway you look at us we're theatrical.
At beach parties, we do showy things like eat fire. Or hang from the tops of palm trees by our feet. Or balance on bicycles while removing 12 shirts.
Our women are show-stoppers. Blends of China, Africa, Britain, they're dramatic looking, then dress in stage-y colors like red, orange, purple. Pow.
We're even melodramatic at Christmas.
In addition to sweet jolly Santa, we have scary John Canoe-grotesque masked characters who dance through the streets acting crazy, waving their hands and shooing away children.
Our kids not only get gifts for Christmas, they get frightened, too.
