This summer, you and eleven
friends could rent this 6-bedroom,
8 1/2 acre estate facing the ocean
near Ocho Rios for about $4 per
person per day. Unless a certain
Princess reserves it first.
The Princess, who protocol dictates shall remain nameless, recently stayed at this $350,000 estate while in Ocho Rios on matters of Crown. And, as princesses do, she vowed someday to return. But if Her Highness's Royal Travel Agent doesn't make the reservations soon, your Royal Highness can stay here instead.
No matter who gets to Ciboney first, the losers can console themselves in any of the hundred and fifty other $75,000 to $500,000 pivate estates available for rental. (The owners generally offer them in summer to help defray the enormous expenses and to keep the staff in shape for the winter season.)
The rentals sound high at first, but if you share the cost, it's even less than a third or fourth class hotel. Ciboney's monthly rental is $1450. Divide that by you and eleven friends, and you get $120 a month each. Or, $4 a day. If you have only five friends, the cost is $8. For two who'd like to have Ciboney all to themselves. it's $21 a day each.
There are dozens of smaller, but no less luxurious houses, for four, at about $7 a day each. Enticingly low. But now here come the hidden charges: Car rental. About $2.50 a day each for four. (You'll definitely need a car. Most of the estate houses are plunk in the middle of plantations or overlooking some wild seascape far from town.)
The second hidden charge is food. About $2 a day per person-cooked by the cook. who comes with the house, served by the maid who comes with the house, set on tablecloths laundered by the laundress who comes with the house, and eaten on a flower-ringed terrace, landscaped by the gardener who comes with the house. (lf you're uneasy about handling all those servants, don't worry. They'll teach you.)
If you want to live the rich, full life without having a rich, full purse, come to Jamaica. You supply the lordly manner. And we'll supply the lordly manor.
