ジャマイカ観光委員会･広告シリーズ（7）
オーチョ･リオスで開かれるパーブー･シンさんの個展では
マンハッタンズの歌声やマティーニのサービスはありません。
「お母さん、失礼しますよ」
なんてこと。
飲み物一つをとってみても、ジャマイカではニューヨークのギャラリーのそれ、
とは違うのです。
絵をご覧になるとき、とても大きな違いとなります。マンハッタンズと
マティーニの接待は、比較的、寛大なこころもちにしてくれますが、ここでは、ホワイ
トラムパンチで手ごわい批判者にされますよ。（「２杯目には・・・」ジャマイカの
絵描き達曰く「お母さんのすることでさえ、メチャクチャに批判しちゃうよ。」）
他には、値段の違いです。パーブー･シンさんは、この島で一番有名な絵描きさんですが、
彼の神秘的な作品『新人類の孵化』（下段、左から二番目）はなんと４００ドル。その
左の『海岸の二十世紀』は３００ドル。原始彫刻家マリカ･レイノルズさんの逸品は６０
ドルぐらいでお求めになれます。(カポの名で知られる彼は、独自のキリスト教的儀式集
会の牧師さんでもあります）
ヨーロッパから追放された芸術家、モンテゴベイ在住のレスジェンスキーさんや、ロン
グベイのデス･ヴェグニスさんは、ニューヨークやパリ流の値段ではなく、ジャマイカ
流の安値で作品が付値売されてれていてます。（ここで暮らすには、それほどお金がか
からないということもあるようですが。）
さあ、どうですか。この夏、島の北側に建てられた２寝室付のコテージで、海の絶景を
1ヶ月のあいだ、絵なんかを描きながらお2人で過ごされては。料理人、メイド、お2人
だけのため。人けの少ない入り江のビーチもお2人だけのため。お1人様約１７５ドル。
ジャマイカで絵を買ったり、描いたりなんて興味の無いあなた、いらしてください。あ
なたのお好きなように、街を彩ってみませんか。

At Parboo Singh's one man show
in Ocho Rios, those are not
Manhattans and Martinis they're
serving. But something called
"Rude To Your Mama."
Gallery showings in Jamaica are not like gallery showings in New York. For one thing, the drinks arc different. And that can make an enormous difference in the way you look at the paintings. Manhattans and Martinis make you relatively forgiving. But down here, the white rum punch turns you into a regular tiger of a critic. ("Two glasses," say Jamaican painters, "and a man would even criticize his own mother's work.")
Another point of difference is price. Parboo Singh is the most famous painter on the island. Yet his mystical "New Race Emerging" (bottom row, second from left) is only $400. To its left is his "Twentieth Century Littoral," $300. You can buy a major stone head from primitive sculptor Mallica Reynolds, for about $60. (Kapo, as he is known, is a Christian mystic and shepherd of his own congregation.)
Even the expatriate Europeans, like Leszczynski in Montego Bay, and Des Vignies out at Long Bay, sell their work for less in the Jamaican galleries than they could get in New York or Paris. (Perhaps because they need a lot less money to live on down here.)
So, for that matter, would you. During the summer, two could spend a month painting the spectacular seascapes on the north shore for about $175 each. Including a two-bedroom cottage, cook, maid, and sometimes even a swimming cove, private, for two.
Even if you don't want to buy a painting in Jamaica or paint a painting in Jamaica, come. You can always paint the town.
