サン･ルイ島のレストラン〔オーランジュ〕へ行ったことは覚えています。夕餉でしたから猫のガスパールは見かけなかったかわりに、〔オーランジュ〕の給仕人はすべて細っそりとした美男子で、耳元に口を寄せてまるで睦言のように今宵のメニューをささやいたのです。
入る店を間違えたと思いました。
これも、本邦初公開･初訳です。

パリ。
展望ガラス屋根つきの観光バスやリッツの部屋からは見ないパリがあります。
パリジャンのパリです。
パリジャンが大きい公園や広い並木通りを好きでないなどというつもりはありません。
はっきりいって、パリジャンが生活しているのは、裏通りのちっちゃな裏庭つきのアパートなんです。
パリのほんとうの姿をご覧になりたい？
ボージュ広場へいらしてください。ヴィクトル・ユーゴーが引っ越して来て住んでからこのかた、変化していません。そりゃまあ、樹木のこぶはすこしは増えたでしょうよ、そして、新しい世代の子どもたちは広場の通路でサッカーをします。 そのほかは当時のままといえます。
セーヌ川ぞいの河岸道をぶらついてご覧なさい(そこでは、画廊と棚いっばいに古本を並べた出店がずらりと軒を並べています)。
ルーヴルへいらっしゃったら、ドラクロアの部屋で力作を鑑賞なさってください。そのあと、川向こうのパレス･ドゥ･フュールスタンブールに残っている彼のアトリエへ行きましょう。往時のままに残されています。
ついでですから、学生街---ラテン･クォーターの中心あたりにあるクリュニー博物館へ立ち寄り、ゴシック調の絢爛たるタペストリーを鑑賞しましょう。
グルメにご興味がおありで？ 優雅な時代の末期を象徴するようなマキシムにはいらっしゃいましたか? ご家族でお楽しみになれるビストロも見逃せません。ママの手づくりのマルセイユ風味のおいしいブイヤベースはいかが？ ワインをお迷いなったら、パパにおまかせになればいいんです。手ごろなお値段で飛びきりおいしいのをすすめてくれます。
ノートルダム寺院にお入りになったからには、道を隔てたサン・シャペルのステンド･グラスの窓も見落とせませんよ。ついでに、サン･ジェルマン･デ･プレの通りの名にもなっている、パリで最古の灰色の教会にも足を踏み入れ、静謐でひんやりとした空気を味わってください。
歩道にまではみだしたカフェの椅子に腰を落ちつけて、通りを行く若い女性を鑑賞する？ パリへいらしたら、絶対に欠かせないことの一つがこれですが、モンマルトルの露天市場の雑踏にいる人びとの観察も付け加えましょう。
19世紀の記念塔であるエッフェル塔には上ってごらんになりましたよね？ セーヌの水上遊覧船は？
お疲れじゃない？ じゃ、サン･ルイ島とマレイ島の散策をおすすめします。隅から隅までお歩きになってください。
けだるそうに陽なたぼっこをしている石像や鉢植えのゼラニウムの花壇、喉をごろごろいわせているガスパール種の猫にも出会えたでしょう？

Take away the parks, the boulevards,
the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Opera,
the girls, the shops, the monuments,
the restaurants, the Seine,
the cathedrals and the cafes, and what's left?
Paris.
The Paris you won't see from a glass-dome tour bus or a room at the Ritz. The Paris of the Parisians.
Not that the Parisians don't love their big parks and wide boulevards.
It's just that they live on the small courtyards off the narrow back streets.
Want to see Paris?
Go see the Place des Vosges; it hasn't changed since Victor Hugo moved out. The trees are a little more gnarled and a new generation of kids play soccer in the paths ; otherwise it's the same.
And go stroll the rue de Seine, where the art galleries and manuscript shops are packed together like books on a shelf.
Go see the De1acroix masterpieces in the Louvre, then cross the river to Place de Furstenberg and visit the atelier where he worked; it's just as he left it. And' take in the tapestries in the Cluny museum, a charming chunk of the Gothic age, in the heart of the student quarter.
Want to go gourmet? Do treat yourself to the end-of an- era elegance of Maxim's.
But don't skip the family bistros, where Mamma cooks up' the best bouillabaisse this side of Marseille and Papa helps you pick out an "honest" wine that, somehow, turns out to be just right.
Take in Notre Dame, but don't miss the magnificent stained glass windows of Sainte-Chapelle, just across
the way.And spend a cool hour in the soft greyness of St-Germain-des-Pres, the oldest church in Paris, and the most restful.
Want to scout the girls from a sidewalk cafe? It's a must. But so are the colorful market-folk in the street
stalls of Montmartre.
Want to see the famous monuments, the Eiffel Tower, the Seine?
Fine. But also make a walking tour of the Ile St-Louis and the Marais. And wander into those courtyards; you'll find old stone statues, stacks of potted geraniums and a purring cat named Gaspard snoozing in the sun.
Next time you see Paris, see Paris. Explore the place, and find out what it's really like.
Paris remains, even today, one of the great undiscovered cities of the world.
