わずか、６歳だなんて、信じられますか？
いえいえ、彼ではありません。彼---イェンス･クイストゴーは４０歳、デンマーク人で、ダンスクのデザイナーです。
クイストゴーが顎ひげをたくわえているのは、父親と祖父もそうしていたからなんです。父子相伝を、彼は当たり前のこととして受け取っています。
かれは彫刻家であり、銀細工も手がけ、工具すらつくります。
とはいえ、彼の名声は、テーブルの上の製品群によってもたらされました。６年前に、ある米国人がコペンハーゲンの製品展示館で彼がデザインしたナイフとフォークに目をとめました。そして、彼がデザインしたテーブルまわりの製品すべてを、ブランド名「ダンスク」として米国で販売することにしたのです。
米国では、熱狂的に受け入れられました。それはそうでしょう。チーク製品は、すべすべに磨かれています。エナメル製品は、驚くほど軽くて持ちやすい。ステンレス製品で一例をあげると、完全に対象形につくられているナイフ---どっちの刃でも使用可能です。クイストゴーは自分のデザインの基本は、流れるような線---といっています。
これらの製品たちが、まだ６歳だなんて信じられますか？ とにかく、永く身近で使っていても飽きのこないデザインだとは、お認めいただけますね。上質のアートと同じです。
Would you believe it? Only six years old.
Not him. He's forty years old. He's Jens Quistgaard, Danish designer of Dansk. It's Dansk that's six years old.
Quistgaard wears a bread because his father and grandfather before him wore beards. It is as natural to him as his knickers and bicycle.
He is a sculptor, silversmith, toolmaker. But his particular fame rests on the top of table. Six years ago a viusiting American discovered a singular
knife and fork desigin of Quistgaard's buried in a Copenhagen museum, rooted out the rest of his design, promptly dubbed them "'Dansk" (the proper word for "Danish"）ａnd brought them to America.
Dansk pieces caught on immediately. Great teak bowls. Poppy colored enamelware (surprisingly light). Forget stainless. Radicelly beautiful sterling with a perfectly symmetrical knife(each side has a cutting edge).
What is their secret? Probably Quistgaard answers it best."A branch never sticks out of a tree. It flows out. I ;like my work to flow."
It is hard for people to believe Dansk designs are only six years old.
Like all good art, they seen to have been around forever.
