ジャマイカ観光委員会･広告シリーズ（３）
「ジャマイカ訛り」で歌われるって、何語の訛りなのか疑問におもったので、
島の略史をググっみた。５００年ほど前にコロンブスに見つかってからはス
ペイン領、３７０年ほど前に英国領になり、１８６５年には直轄領。英国王
を元首にいただくイギリス連邦の一員。
ということは、英語がジャマイカ風に訛っているからアメリカからの観光客
にとってルイーズ･ベネット･コバーリーの歌詞はルイジアナのソープ･オペラ
みたいに聴こえるってことか。

ソープ･オペラを聴かなきゃ
訪ねた甲斐なし。
ルイーズ･ベネット･コバーリーときたら、
それこそ底知れぬプリ･マドンナなんです。
火曜日にジャマイカへお着きになったとします。ラジオを借りてください。そして、夜8時、
同じように聴いている何千の土地っ子人といっしょに「ルーとラニーのショー」にダイヤル
を合わせてください。何が起こるか分かろうとなさるなら、まず、ショックに耐えること。
ルー役のルイーズがこう歌いはしめたら…"Unoo bettah fiffe arks…" あなたはわれらが
ヒロインが、ならず者の亭主に乱暴されるながら何をしようとしているか、はっきりご理解
になると思いますよ。
まあ、そんなことは序の口です。ジャマイカの生活の中では、音楽とかお祭り騒ぎは日常茶
飯事なんです（そしてあなたはきっと笑死なさる）。
同じ夜遅く、ホテルの桟橋がスケア･ザ･ジョン･カヌーたちに占拠されてしまうのをご覧にな
るでしよう。そのグロテスクな衣装や儀式のようなダンスは、アフリカとエリザベス朝英国の
混合物です。火吹きが口から火焔を1メートル以も吹きだしたとき、あなたはきっと飛び上が
って逃げ出してしまうでしょう（あなたにだって出来る手品ですがね。150度のジャマイカ･
ラムを含めばいいだけです）。
西インド諸島のゴム採取女たちが、低いリンボーをじわじわとくぐっていく魔術もご覧になる
はず。つづいてジェリコ王やカリプソ･カウボーイがあれこれ歌って踊るのも。（略）

until you've heard a soap opera in Jamaican dialect.
Louice Bennett Coverly is
the incomprehensible
leading lady.
If you arrive in Jamaica on a Tuesday, borrow a radio. And at 8PM, along with thousands of Jamaicans,
turn to the Lou and Ranny Show. Be prepared for a shock, though, if you expect to understand it.
When Louise, as Lou, delivers lines like "Unoo bettah fit fe arks, A whey fe do, Mass Ran!" you won't
have the foggiest notion of what's happening to our heroine --- in the clutches of her scalawag of a
husband.
But somehow, it doesn't matter. The music and gaiety of Iamaican life come through anyway. And "you dead
from laugh."
Later that same night, you may watch your hotel pier being invaded by a boatload of scare-the-baby John
Canoes, whose grotesque costumes and ritual dances are a cross between slave-trade Africa and Elizabethan
England.
You'll jump back as the fire-breather shoots flames four feet from his mouth (a trick, you may be doing
yourself, if you don't watch your intake of our 150 proof white Jamaican rum). You'll see West India rubber
women ooooze their bodies under the low limbo.
And hear Lord Jellico or The Calypso Cowboy bounce throu "Linstead Market" or "Back Back, Belly to Belly."
But entertainment in Jamaica doesn't end with radio and hotels, Up in the Red Hills, you might find a paying
crew changing "Go down a Manuel Road Mon, you haven't heard an thing, 'til you've heard Jamaican.' "
