です。なぜそんなに正確に言えるかって？ わがアストロジェット機
の機長がそういっています。彼の推測の数字ではありません。彼のい
う189海里という答は、私どもアメリカン航空が採用した装置によるも
のです。この装置は ＤＭＥ(距離測定装置）と呼ばれ、地上の信号所
から200マイルはなれたところでも読み取りができます。どんなに厚い
雲がさえぎっても、機長はただダイヤルを見るだけで自分がいま目的
地からどのくらいの地点にあるかを知ることができます。
ＦＡＡがこのＤＭＥをすべてのジェット航空会社で採用するようにと

How can we be so sure? Because that's where the Astrojet captain
says he is.
And he isn't guessing.
His "１８９ nautical miles" comes from ａnew device now in use on
every Astrojet we fly. This device is called ＤＭＥ (for Distance
Measuring E:quipment). It gives your captain continuous distance
readines from ground positions along yoりr route.
ＤＭＥ sends out radio pulses from the Astrojet to ａ ground beacon.
This beacon can be as far away as 200 miles. The beacon automatica-
lly transmits ａ return pulse the instant it receives one.
Ａ special ＤＭＥ circuit on the Astroiet instant converts the time
between sending and receiving a pulse into nautical miles.
No matter how cloudy it is. your Astrojet captain need only glance
at the dial to find out how far he is from virtually any destination. it might interest you to know that the ＦＡＡ has set ａ deadline
requiring all jet airliners to use ＤＭＥ． But Astrojets have
always had this extra navigation aid.
Of course. when it comes to locating the right Astrojet for you. your
travel agent has ａ device that's almost as fast as ＤＭＥ―and it
has a dial, too. Or you can cail American Airlines yourself.
