18世紀の名残りをとどめるフランスの地方の人びと。
フランスは、タイム･マシンの国です。
フランスの地方に一歩踏みこむことは、１８世紀の（あるいは１７世紀、１６世紀、中世の、とにかくその時代のすべての)田舎を知ることになります。これは巧妙なトリックではありますが、まあ、うまくやってはいます。
たとえば、ノルマンディーへ行ってご覧なさい。郊外に足をのばすと、一面にキルトを敷きつめたかのごとき高地の農場が広がっています。そこでは、今も昔とかわらず、馬がのんびりと鋤（すき）や荷車を牽き、ノルマン人の農夫は麦わらを編んだ肩掛けの袋から種播きをしています（トラクター拒否主義者だからではありません。農業はフランスで大きな地位を占めています。ただ、少数の農民が昔風のやり方が好きなんです）。
農婦はいまも、黒を基調にした衣服（この地方では100年間、黒が基調となっていたからです）を着て市場へ行き、ちょっと裕福な人たちはベレーをかぶり、スモック服を着、陽覆いのある道ばたのカフェで林檎（りんご）酒をすすりながら収穫の話に花を咲かせています。そこへ入って行き、この人たちとテーブルを囲んでご覧なさい。彼らはあなたの下手なフランス語すら大目に見てくれますし、カルヴァドスという土地産の万能薬をすすめてくれるでしょう。
あるいは、ブルターニュ地方へ行ってご覧なさい。海岸ぞいにある小さな村を訪れたらホリー･デイ（聖日）を過ごすことがおできになるでしょう。その日、村人（子どもたちも）は何世紀も昔の豪華な衣裳をまとうのです。袖口に刺繍をほどこしたもの、７色のサッシュ、白レースの頭巾---信じられないほどすてきな光景で、仲間に加わりたくなりましょう。この人々が中心部の広場でバク･パイプの音（ね）にあわせて踊る様子を鑑賞しましょう。
ここに滞在しているあいだに、フィニステール郊外、サン･タンヌ･ラ･パル寺院でくりひろげられる大パルドン祭を見に行ってごらんなさい。あたかもブリガドーン Brigadoon がここではそれが実際に行われているのです。
もうしばらくこの地にいらっしゃるつもりなら、すぐ隣りのポン･タヴェンにも行ってご覧なさい。黒服を着た女性が柳の小枝を編んだバスケットをかかえて市場で、波止場に沿って並んでいる露天店から野菜を買っている光景が見られます。いつも変わらない光景なんです、どうしてかって？
（注：ゴーギャンがポン･タヴェを描いています。とにかく、信じられないほど絵画的でローカル色豊かなこの町を、ぜひご覧になってください。途端に納得なさいますよ。この光景は、実際に行ってみないかぎり、写真でしか見ることができないものなんです）。
フランス北東部の山あい地方もおすすめです。ライン川に沿って静かに眠っている、おとぎの国のような土地柄です。ある村（ストラスブールを基点にしてお探しになればすぐにわかります）では、祭日には家々が豆電球や花で装飾し、旗を掲げます。昔と比べて唯一つ変わったのは、明かりが電気になったことだけですが、それでも多くの家はまだ蝋燭を使っているんですよ。まあ、よそ目にはちょっとわからないかもしれません。
フランスの真ん中あたりに位置している、ル・ピュイもお忘れなく（巡礼路の基点となっていた１０世紀の教会---玄武岩の頂上に建つサン=ミッシェル=デギュイユ礼拝堂は歴史的遺産です）。
南西部の角っこにあたるピレネー山脈の山麓の村々も一見の価値ありです。羊飼いたちが竹馬に乗って羊たちを監視しているんですから。
そう、古くからつづいている伝統といったら、バスクの地に伝わっているセブン･ジャンプの踊りがあります。驚くなかれ、もう、１０００年も受け継がれているんですよ。

北西地区のカーンの年に一度の大食い大会を、うっかり忘れるところでした。外野席からの野次が噴飯ものなんです。
古いものを今日まで、山のように保ちつづけているフランスを見てください。
フランスは、いろんな顔をもっています。発見するのはあなたです。行く先々でそこの住民たちと暖かい交流をかわすのも、あなた次第。

18th Century French Provincial.
France is a time machine.
Slip into the provinces of France and you slip into the 18th century (or the 17th, or the 16th, or the Middle Ages; it's all there); it's a neat trick, and it works.
It can work for you, too.
Try Normandy, for example.
Go into the country, where the big upland farms spread like a lush green quilt across the landscape. Out here neavy horses still draw the plows and wagons and the old Norman farmers still sow seed from flat-strapped baskets. (Not that they're antitractor; agriculture is big business in France. It's just that some farmers still like to do it the old way.)
Head on into town where the peasant women still wear their basic black (it'sbeen basic for hundreds of years here) to market and the senior citizens still wear their berets and smocks as they sit in the shaded street cafes, sipping cider and
talking crops. Join them at table and the chances are good they will tolerate your bad French and stand you to a glass of the local elixir: Calvados. This heady stuff hasn't changed for more generations than you could count; taste it and you'll see why.
Or try Brittany. Make it into one of the tiny coastal villages, and make sureyou relntown on one of the Holy Days. That's when all the folks (the kids, too) dress up in their centuriesold finery.
The embroidered shirtbands, the rainbow sashes and the white lace coifs are too spectacular to be believed; you'll want to take slides. Watch them dancing on the town green to a wheezing band of Breton bagpIpes.
While you're at it, try the Feast of the Great Pardon at the Shrine of Ste-Anne la Palud, out in Finistere. It' ssomething like Brigadoon, only here it's real.
And while you're still in the neighborhood, try Pont-Aven. Watch the black-robed women lugging beige wicker baskets to market and watch them stocking up from the great straw vats of plump vegetables that line the quay. It's always been this way; why change?
(Note: Gauguin painted in Pont-Aven. Take one look at this incredibly picturesque provincial town and you'll see why. This is the kind of place you see only in paintingsunless you're there.)
Try the northeast pocket of France, a charming never-never land that nestles snug along the Rhine. On the feast days in these villages (start in Strasbourg and explore from there), the houses are strung with lights, flowers and thick green boughs, and draped with flags. The only difference· between now and then is that some of the lights are electric, but there are still so many candles you won't know the difference.
And try Le Puy, in the heart of France, where whole constellations of candles float in flickering cluster up the side of a black volcano in the traditional pilgrimage processions to the lOthcentury chapel of St-Michel-d'Aiguilhe.
Try the southwest corner of France, the foothills of the Pyrenees, where shepherds still watch over their sheep while standing on stilts.
Another custom to catch: the Dance of the Seven Jumps. If you find yourself wondering how these Basquemen can stay off the ground for such extended leaps, don't forget they've been doing this dance for the past thousand years.
Try Caen, back up in the northwest sector, during the annual tripe-eating contest, when the spectators heckle from the sidelines, as they always have.
Try Ribeauville during the annual procession of the cooks when huge floats of monster delicacies ride through the center of town.
Try France, where so much that was yesterday still stands intact today.
Try France where you will see, in each face, the easy, open warmth of a people who have inherited (and welcome you to share) the trad. itions of centurIes.
