Which was your favorite?

You are looking at the winners.
The famous Printers' Ink executive survey voted Volkswagen advertising the best in 1960.
The reasons?
Listen to the voters: "Refreshing," "Off-beat be- lievabiIity," "Concentration on fact," "Sales results(just look at all the bugs on the road.)"
The award was made not just for one ad but for the entire series. This is important to an advertiser.
It means that ad after ad worked hard for him. It means that the agency which created these ads is able to make every ad count.
This agency---Doyle Dane Bernbach---as sustained the same continuity of provocative advertising in its work for Polaroid Cameras, El Al Airlines,
Ohrbach's, Chemstrand, Schenley, French Government Tourist, Yardley, Coffee of (Colombia, Thom McAn, ABC-TV Network, Dreyfus Fund, Lane Furniture and others.
The record is quite clear. In another survey taken last year by News Front magazine, advertising experts were asked to choose- the 10 best ads of the decade 1950 to 1960.
Of the 10 best campaigns chosen, one agency had created four. That agency is:
Doyle Dane Bernbach.

If you made cars, would you run this ad?

Most car makers---most advertisers, for that matter---wouldn't go near an ad like this.
Too negative. Too daring.
Volkswagen didn't think so.
They agreed with us it would take something pretty startling to get poeple to read---and believe---a story on factory inspection.
Not just a trick or gimmick. But something coming out of the story itself.
As you can see, we came up with that something.
Apart from the ad's siccess---and the saccess of Volkswagen advertising in general---there's another point here.
An advertising agency with the right ideas attracts the right clients.

DO THIS
OR DIE

Is this ad kind of trick?
No. But it could have been.
And at sxactly that point rests a do or die decision for American bissiness.
We in advertising, together with our cliants, have all the power \and skill t trick peple. Or so we thinh.
But we're wrong. We can't fool any of the people any of the time.
There is indeed a twelve-year-old mentality in this country; every six- year-old has one.
We are a nation of smart peple.
And most smart peple ignore most advertising because most advertising ignores smart people.
Indead we talk to each other.
We debate endlessly about the medium and the massage. Nonsense. In advertising, the massage itself is the
massage.
A blank page and blank television screen are one and same.
A above all, the massages we putright on those pages and on those tele-vision screens must be the truth. For if we play tricks with the truth, we die.
Now. The other side of the coin.
Telling the truth about a product demands a product that's worth telling the truth about.
Sadly, so msny products aren't.
So many products don't anythig better. Or anything different. So many don't work quite right. Or don't test. Or simply don't matter.
If we also play this trick, we also die.
Because advertising only helps a bad product fail faster.
No donkey chases the carrot forever. He catches on. And quits.
That's the lesson to remember.
Unless we do, we die.
Unless we change, the tidal wave of consumer indifference will wallop into the mountain of advertising and msnu-facturing drived.
Thae day we die.
We'll diein our marketplace. On oue shelves. In our gleaming packages of empty promises.
Not with bang. Not with a whimper.
But by our own skilled hands.
