Getting killed is easy.
Staying alive is work.

The easiest way to take care of a car is to let it take care of itself. You just drive it and drive it until something goes wrong, and then you get it fixed.
The only trouble is, if something goes very, very wrong you may never have a chance to get it fixed.
Then there's the hard way to take care of a car.
It takes some work. It will cost you some money. And it may save your life.
We strongly recommend the hard way.
Most of the things you have to de are pretty obvious. But it's the most obvious things that often go wrong.
For example, when nobody's around, drive about 20 mph and slam on your brakes [1]. If your car pulls to one side, or if the pedal goes down more than 2 inches, or if the brakes feel 'mushy,' they need fixing.
Reach in the window and turn the steenng wheel [2], while you watch the front wheels.
If you have to turn the steenng wheel more than an inch to make the front wheels move,
there's too much play in the steenng and you should get it looked at.
Look for holes in the muffler and tail pipe.
[3](Carbon monoxide gets Into the blood-stream 200 times as fast as oxygen. And you can't smell it.)
Ties [4] should have good treads and they shouldn't have cuts or bruises. If your tires have flat spots or are worn unevenly, your wheels need realignment. (A good time to check tires is when your car is up on the rack for an oil change.)
Have someone get in your car while you walk around and check to see if the head, tail, and stop lights [5] and turn signals [6] work. (While you're at it, wipe the lenses so you can see people and they can see you.)
Push down on the back of your car, hard enough to make it bounce. If it bounces more than 11/2 times before stopping, have your shock absorbers [7] checked, (Shock absorbers are supposed to absorb shocks: If they don't they can bounce you right off the road.)
If you don't have front seat belts [8] get them installed and use them every time you drive. If you often carry passengers in the back seat, get a couple of sets installed there, too.
Make sure your wiper blades [9] are clean and in good shape (The best way to clean them is with straight ammonia. If you can't remember the last time you replaced them, the chances are you need new ones.)
If you don't have an outside mirror, [10] get one put on. It could save your life someday when you don't want to get your head wet.
The things we've just gone over are things you can do yourself.
But there are some other, very important things you can't do yourself, because you probably don't know how and you certainly don't have the proper ecuipment.
So take your car to a good service station and ask for a good safety check.
They'll do things like pull off a wheel to see if the brake lining is worn, realign the front wheels, and aim your headlights.
They'll go over the steering mechanism, check the exhaust system for cracks or leaks, and look for things (a worn fan belt. for example) that could make trouble for you on the road.
We at Mobil have a vested interest in your safety. We'd like to sell you some gasoline and oil someday. And we can't do it if you don't keep your car (and yourself) in good shape.
Nobody says it's easy. It takes a little work, But it won't kill you.

Mobil We want you to live.
