2007年10月に、「レン・シローイッツ氏のスピーチ」の連載の中で4回ほど、モービルが1966年に創業100周年を記念し、社会還元事業として行なって、すごい反響を呼んだ安全運転呼びかけキャンペーンの数作品を紹介しました。
先日、倉庫から元の記録が出てきたので、項を改め、英文つきで掲載しています。

1895年、オハイオには僅か2台しか車があリませんでした。
何が起こったかはご想像ください。
オハイオ州にわずか2台しかなかった当時のこと---衝突したのです。
ふきだしたくなるような話ですが、わかるような気もします。それは、2台以上の車が走っていれば衝突も起こりうるこなのですから。天の摂理なのです。
1億台もの車が走った去年、1,500万件以上の事故が起こり、死者は5万5000人を越える数を記録しました、
もはや笑ってすませることはできないのです。けれども、どうしてこんなに多くの事故が起きるのかわかります。車がふえれはそれだけ事故も避け難くなるのですから。死者がふえるのも同じことで、天の摂理なのです。
違いますか？
米国の同胞たちも、そう考えてごらんなさい。君たちも幾万もの人たちと同じように死んでいくのだと。果てしなく広がっていく中で、君たちの多くが死んでいくのだと。こういうふうにハイウェイの上で死んでいくのが自然の死に方だと考えればいいのですから。
逃がれられない。
これから君たちに話しをしてあげましょう。
今年の9月5日、スウェーデンは、走行車線を左から右へ切りかえました。
専門家はこの切りかえを知って殺人を予告しましたが、予告は幸いにもはずれたのです。
ハイウェイでの死者が50％も減ったのす。
(一方、一般道路でのそれは僅かに4％減でした)。
どうやってこれを実行したのでしょうか？
切りかえが行われたよ9月5日、国中の人々が、まるでこの日のために生きてきたかのごとくドライブをはじめました。
彼らはすんなりとやってのけました。
右側通行に反対を唱えるものは誰もいませんでした。
両手でしっかりとハンドルをとりました。
目はまっすぐに前に向けて。
心を運転に集中して。
すんなりとやってのけたのです。
この結果、50％を上回るはずの死者が逆にそれ以下になったのです。(私たちが車の通行帯をかえたらどういうことになるかはご想像ください)。
まだ不思議にお思いですか？
モービルは、自動車がこの世に登場してからずっとガソリンとオイルを売り続けています。個人的な意見を申しますと、
米国においても、スウェーデンにおいても(この国でも私
たちはガソリンとオイルを売っていますが)運転マナーにまったく近いはありませんでした。あえて違いをあげるとすれば、ハイウェイでの死者数です。これし9月5日までの話ですが。
ところが、9月3日以後、大きな違いが一つだけでてきました。少なくともスウェーデン人は生きる喜びを知ったということです。彼らは生きていたいのです。

In 1895 there were only two cars in Ohio. Guess what happened？
The story is that when there were only two cars in the entire state of Ohio---they collided.
Which is kind of funny. And yet, quite understandable.
Because whenever you have two or more cars on the road, you have to have accidents. It's the natural order of things.
Last year, with almost a hundred million cars on the road, we had over 13 million accidents. And 53,000 deaths.
That isn't quite so funny. But still very understandable. The more cars you have on the road, the more accidents you have to have; and the more deaths. It's the natural order of things.
Right?
Fellow Americans, continue to think like that and you'll continue to die by the tens of thousands. Every year, more of you will die at an ever-escalatin rale. Because you think that dying on the highway is a natural way to die. Inescapable.
We have a story for you.
On september 3rd of this year, Sweden changed over from driving on the left-hand side of the road to the right-hand side.
The experts predicted murder. And the were wrong.
Highway fatalities dropped over 50%. (While the number of cars on the road dropped only 4%.)
How did they do it?
Starting september 3rd, the Whole country started todriveas if their lives depended on it:
They took it easy.
They refused to fight for the right of way.
They kept both hands on the wheel.
Both eyes on the road.
And their minds on what they were doing.
They took it easy in every way possible.
So instead of fatalities going up 50% (after all, imagine what would happen here if we had to start driving on the opposite side of the road) fatalities went down 50%.
Do you still think it can't be done?
We at Mobil have been selling gasoline and oil for almost as long as there have been automobiles.
And from personal observation, here and in Sweden (where we also sell gasoline and oil) there were never any differences in national driving habits. And very little difference in the national rates of death on the highway. Until september 3rd.
Since september 3rd. there has been one big difference: The Swedes, at least, have dis covered that life issweet.
And they want to live.

【chuukyuu メモリー】「今年の9月3日、スウェーデンは---」とあるのは、1967年のことです。この年の10月、ぼくはボルボ社とその工場を取材するためにヨーテボイを訪ねています。道々には、まだ取り払われていない左側走行のころの標識などには蔽いが被せられ、逆集金になった料金所なども古いポイント窓口にはシートがかぶせてありました。
右側走行の他国から来たドライバーの自動車事故を減らすのが主目的の処置でしたが、ものすごい金をかけてやったのですね。
